After playing Hoi4 and Vic2 again... we need a Cold War game
I realized what is missing from Paradox's grand strategy series. It's a game set during the Cold War. I don't think there is one. We can play as the USA, the Soviet Union, or even middle powers like West Germany and Yugoslavia will be super interesting to play. We will need to try and build up the economy and can keep track of indicators of how big your economy using GDP is and how successful your policies are. With a growing economy, you'll be able to fund military projects, including experimental projects like Reagan's star wars and more traditional projects like building up the Soviet Navy to match that of the US navy. And the issue of nuclear armageddon looming over the age, you could trigger it by simply launching missiles at the opposing nuclear power. At the same time, you could work on espionage and get a nonnuclear county to start a war and then intervene on behalf of the country that started it to gain territory without nuclear war. Some exciting events like Korean War, Vietnam War, Cuban Missile Crisis, Afghanistan war, etc, could be added to the game. It has huge potential, I think, if there was a Cold war game. It'd be very fresh and a lot of fun playing diplomacy, adding nations to the NATO or the Warsaw Pact or reforming the nonaligned bloc into an actual defense bloc... developing the economy from the ashes of WW2 to attempting perestroika either in the late 1980s or trigger it earlier through a focus tree.

Ppl have requested it time and time again and PDX has say they have no intention of doing cold war or modern era. But Vicky 3 finally confirmed so you can keep hoping I guess

Victoria 3 will 100% have a cold war mod where all or nearly all of that should be possible, so that's nice.

Worth mentioning that the cold war was incredibly peaceful of a time aside from a few regional wars. Meaning that Victoria 3's focus on politics and economics instead of military is incredibly well suited to this period. A paradox style cold war era game would basically just be a Victoria 3 mod anyways, just with a bit more flavor and nothing a modder couldn't do.

I suppose only thing missing is UN ? I think they will add league of nations mechanics down the line in Vickey 3 like galactic council in stellaris

Just go buy supreme ruler ultimate. It’s exactly what you want all the way from 1914 into modern. It’s 5 games throughout 10 years mixed into one with updated graphics and interface. Cold War is one of my favorite starts in that game and it is also very closely related to Victoria as well.

Sadly the leaders don't change and the ai only know conquer stuff. They don't play it with politics and liberate other countries and such things. They only try to conquer the world.
Yes you can play it from 1914 to 2020. But in 2020 its still something like ww1 with modern tech :D So its more a game which you play 1914, or 1939 or 1950 or 2020

While I think it would be interesting to see a Cold War game, it might be challenging to make. It's way easier to make a World War III game, but the dominant theory of the time was Mutual Assured Destruction, so if nuclear war breaks out, everybody should lose a cold war game. So you need to make progress against your opponents through proxy wars, economics and espionage while staying below the threshold that would provoke nuclear confronation. Interesting in theory, but how do you make that fun as a game? It's not how players are used to playing strategy games.

Yeah the world of post ww2 is too simple in some sense and too complex in some sense to make it a good grand strategy. MAD and globalization stopped most people from having the expansionistic dream. Do you think it's really fun to have some low-intensity conflicts for decades? YES I DO. But it's so hard to make properly, I guess.

Other Cold War games game-fy that aspect. It's not so much about making sure you win, but making sure the other guy loses more than you before the end.

Just mod Hoi4 and go with it dude... not like we need one anyway. I would start with US and beat up russia, game over. Russia had NOTHING safe nukes to prevent the US from totaly wiping their arse. And we all know paradox would let it start EXACTLY after WW2, so beating russia as US is as easy as to declear war on them in 1945 to regain the teritory's they want to keep.

Cold War would be a REAL narrow timeframe but if they were to make a game STARTING at the cold war and carrying on through today and beyond... Now that I'd be there for in a heartbeat.

Well, it's not as narrow as HOI, but there was a legit world war going on in HOI's timeframe, so every hour counts. Not so in a game that spans like 30 years. It's too long for hourly play, but too short for the usual Paradox time scale.
