Problems with japan and taxes
Anyone else having more trouble getting japan's economy off the ground after the last patch? the issue with japan before was sitting around waiting for rng rolls to get rid of bad laws, but since passing laws is easier the problem has changed to just not having money. Japan always had money problems but somehow its even worse. They start out at 6 SOL now and when building the first few construction centers at the start of the game, it magically dips into 5 SOL and makes radicals before i can even build anything. The way to get around the no money thing was to raise taxes but since they stupidly changed it to raise expectations, its practically unusable early game.

Before, high taxes naturally made radicals because pops lose income they would otherwise spend on their needs. Now they get those same radicals from less money for goods, radicals because they instantly expect 30-50% better sol, and the insane amount of radicals that makes (since it affects 80% of pops) gets further boosted by 50%. Meanwhile lower taxes gives you........-.5 SOL expectations for losing 30% of your income? -1 for losing almost 50% of it? How is this in any way balanced or appropriate? Raising taxes is one of the few things you can do for handicapped nations like japan and sokoto to help build an economy in the early game. Now your only option is to accept that you will have half your country as radicals for 30 years (meaning endless revolts with the new political movements) or spend 30 years stuck on 30-60 construction points and fall EXTREMELY behind pretty much any western nation. If anyone knows where the where in the files the settings for the tax settings are please let me know so i can go and delete the SOL from the taxes.

So I just made a Japan start.
Taxed Services and tobacco. Left on medium taxes.
Built 8 construction sectors. And noticed a slight SOL decrease due to the change in the wood price. Wood is a basic need for pops. Expensive wood also makes expensive furniture. High prices hurt. Chop more wood.

No problems for me. I'm in the middle of one and Im at 105 mil gdp at 1906. The start was pretty crazy due to radicals but once I passed tenant farmers I ended up with like 4 million loyalists and a huge SOL increase. The game becomes smooth sailing from there.

Hmm, could be that ive just gotten bad luck on passing laws fast enough, i guess ill give it a few more tries to see. I still stand by the SOL on taxes tho, that still needs to go

Why wouldnt taxes affect SOL?
Anything the adversely affects the spending money a pop has available limits what the pop can afford to buy to satisfy its needs.

They made changes to taxes and fix a bunch of bugs, my run with Japan in this update is a lot easier. Just passing the tenant farmer law that allow me access to peasants made the run a lot easier.
