Still learning everything but it took me 10 years to realise there was a subjects tab in the diplomacy menu so I wasnt lowering autonomy as quickly as I could have in my subjects playing Russia.
Edit: What VoiD said reminded me of this, if you have protectorates in Afghanistan for example, the journal entries they have will compel them to fight eachother so you can join the side of whichever protectorate will offer lower autonomy on the winner/loser and just crush them. It doesnt matter who gets stronger since you're going to annex them anyway.
