But on the flip side, the AI will get some bonuses, and it can found its own corporations, further boosting output. Just test the system out, and see if it works for you.
Also, with the upcoming patch and DLC, the whole system is sheduled to receive major changes.
The current benefit of colonies largely rests on getting resources you can't get in your homeland, and selling your goods to their market. Incorporating will bring you tax income but cost bureaucracy.
The update coming next month will bring 'foreign owners' that exist outside of buildings, meaning anything you build in a colony will send it's dividends and the kickbacks they bring, so that will be somewhat significant.
As mentioned creating a subject using the journal entry is an effective way to collect those taxes through a puppet kickback, however I wouldn't recommend that until next months update unless you're sure you've developed all of it's rubber/oil available, as you cannot build for your puppets currently.
