So since almost every achievement can be earned by editing game files, there really isn't any point on tying in to iron man. (Which can be true without invalidating Alex stability concern reasons).
The reason for the change is people seemed to keep pointing out that so many people didn't even even the simplest achievements and it can make the games look bad. Besides people were just force crashing anyway.
I am a casual gamer myself. I don't like hardcore modes in games, as it feels unsatisfying to hit my head on a brick wall. Sure, people can do it, but we're not all built equal.
