Questions about Romania
Hello there,

so i tried my luck with the romania achivement with wallachia and after 20 years the protectorates of the ottomans become independent, normally, because the ottoman empire sucks. So i tried to directly attack moldova to annex them but i found out, that they instantly switched to the russian market and signed a defence pact with the russians.

"okay" i thought. "maybe it is some kind of event and it is easier to play as moldova". So i did it and before the 20 years where up, AI wallachia forms the united principalities with me in a personal union under them. I tried to break free and annex them but everyone really liked it to support dear wallachia (or former wallachia).

So i switched again to wallachia and played to become the united princiüalities but this time the weaker moldova forms it with me (now wallachia again) under them in a personal union. They were weaker in GDP and Prestige, but higher in troop count.

So my question is what the requirements for becoming the united principalities as the player are. I dont talk about the AI wanna beat me up everytime i try something as both countries. I am just curious if it is possible to become the united principalities as a player or if i had just very bad luck. In summary, when i tried to become united principalities the other romaian state did it or after 20 years moldova instantly switched to big friend russia. Did somebody knows the requirements for forming it? It would be nice to know.

Thank you very much!

Yes, I played Romania a few times. The requirement for the united principalities is to research nationalism and then you will get a journal entry for the personal union. If you wait for 10 years for the progress bar to fill you will form Romania. Btw, if you have good relations to all major powers with an interest in Danubia you can get an extra event for the retrocession of a piece of Basarabia, which is handy to get ports at the Black Sea.

To become independent of the Ottomans I am not 100% sure if the Ottomans get an event, or if it is when you grow your GDP enough or something. Anyway you can get free at some point without any fighting.

Now, to get Transylvania is a whole another matter, you will see why WWI had to happen... good luck :)

I'm not entirely sure what happened in my run either, but, I immediately declared independence from the Ottomans in my run, pushed for Moldavia to be independent too even though they sided with the Ottomans, got the Russians to help me and everything went smooth but they (moldavia) immediately went into a personal union with Russia, got a little bit of Russian land too (also I annexed the little spit of land that connects to the sea),
but I managed to fight a war against moldavia and the wargoal was "independence" ? It was really weird, all I did was beat up moldavia and they became independent from Russia, I didn't have to deal with Russia at all.
After all of this, Moldavia and I went into a personal union through an event and after 10 years of this peaceful union Romania formed,
I even got my living standards to #1 in the world lol
Beat Russia and took Bessarabia but I couldn't defeat the Austrians even with the French helping me (theyre a little op atm)

Yes, sometimes i feel like the romanian lands are very mysterious on their own in regards of the things which happen there Panzerfanlol. But i am happy to hear thta your run was at least partially successful :D

And thank you Centipede for your answer, that was exactly what i was looking for. For the automated independence i am quite sure that is the 20 year "sick man of europe" counter on the ottomans side and when there failing to reform, (almost?) all of there protectorates will be free.
But thank you both for your detailled answers, have a nice weekend.

Thanks for confirming, I wasn't sure what triggered the protectorate to transition to independence.

Romania was indeed formed in a mysterious way - as a weak nation at the whims of empires, it owes its existence to astute diplomatic shenanigans. Not many Romanians nowadays can appreciate how unlikely our country's birth was.

I feel like the mystery makes it a fun campaign to try in Vicky3, it was my learning playthrough.
