Victoria 3

Minor to super power, how to?
I am getting the game mechanics down decently now. Still slightly overwhelmed with larger nations. I also typically really enjoy starting small, developing, and becoming strong in these types of games. Is this even very possible in Victoria 3? I just don't want to keep trying and getting beat down each time lol.

My most recent campaign was Morrocco. Things were going great economically. Great Britian decided they wanted my lands, so I was forced to ally with France. They supported me in the war, but I had to give up my big mining province with gold and iron. That sucked and was really going to hit me economically but it was the only choice.

The war commenced and Britain ultimately took my northern most province. The war ended and left me with two provinces. Neither of which produce anything significant and this really beat me down more so than my nation already was. I really don't see a way to recover. Did I do something wrong or is it possible to become large as a nation like Morrocco?

I understand realistically Morrocco probably isn't going to be a superpower, but from a game perspective that can be fun. Any tips are much appreciated.

it's possible since it's more or less RNG compared to Vicky 1 or even 2. But as it was in real life, such countries often had to become protectorates and vassals of great powers to survive. In case of Morocco it's really bad tho because GB always colonises Sahara next to it, otherwise it usually attacks Morocco to ban slave trade. In any case, playing most non-europeans is always a bit random - sometimes great powers don't attack you and sometimes they do. Nobody is fully safe if you aren't one of those great powers.

In order to learn how to ascend, try Japan first. They are a bit isolated and start strong enough, so you'll be somewhat safe for the next decade or even two. This'll give you enough time to develop and find a prospective patron.

Japan can still be attacked to open its market tho. But overall - for sure, even though it's harder to play than in Vicky 2 and especially Ricky.

Well, even if you're attaked to open the market, in most cases, you won't suffer any territorial losses. At worst, Russia might demand Sachalin, but you're in no shape to develop that island anyway just yet.

On the other hand, getting defeated in such a war, or simply surrendering, will humiliate the shogun, opening the way for the Glorious Restoration. That is a very good path towards stomping out the landholders and to modernize the country.

u needed to build up the military a bit and dont be afraid of going into debt ( just dont go into default ie the credit excedes the limit thats realllllly bad for you after all).

and try to go to laissare faire or whatever its called so ur capitalists build for you the economy and make a lot of money that way.

Thanks for all of the advice everyone! Pauloandrade, is this if I play Morocco? Morocco has such a weak military and it seems like it would be challenging to expand it early.

I will try another nation. It just seems like Great Britain always gets involved.

I had a good time as Qasimid state - really easy to form Yemen and take Oman, and you can also pretty easily annex/puppet Ethiopia, Baluchistan/Sindh, and other parts of Africa. You tend to get left alone yourself, though major powers protecting other states can make it hard to form Arabia

Okay, I will check it out. Africa can be nice, because it is so undeveloped.

Quasimid state is another problem, since you have no coal, iron, or even wood in your state. The whole Arabian peninsula is extremely poor in that regard, which means your best course of action is to join a market which has plenty of those goods. Then, try to grab some colonies to secure those strategic goods. Eastern Africa is just across the straight, and it has wood and iron.
