What dictates if your flag will be added to your puppet's flag
I just don't get it, it only does that when you play specific nations (mostly European), and even then it doesn't always do that

The art asset in the game files.

You can find the rules in common/flag_definitions/00_flag_definitions.txt. Some countries have special flags for specific overlords. Otherwise the flag definition needs an "allow_overlord_canton = yes" line to allow the flag of the overlord to appear somewhere. If it has coa_with_overlord_canton, it can specific that the subject should use a different version of its flag on which the overlord flag should appear.
There is also a game option which disallows overlord flags to appear on their subjects.

I wish this was a bit more dynamic. In that you don't have to be a pre-specified nation to have the overlord flags work. Maybe as a major power and higher, regardless of nation, if you're an overlord of another nation other than custom union apply that flag style. ... But then would that dramatically screw with the nations that various flags pending certain conditions (Texas for example, monarchy, lone star and American state flags)?

I think the dynamic system which you are asking for is already there. Any country can have their flag appear on their subjects. But what I forgot in my previous reply is that the overlord flag needs to have a subject_canton line which specifies which flag should appear on the subject. Most countries which have an actual flag definition have that line for some of their flags(usually it is missing from special flags like the communist flags). But some countries don't have a flag definition in which case they get the flag which is named after their tag or they get a generated flag if there is no flag for their tag. And these flags won't appear on a subject. Protectorates and tributaries don't get the flag of their overlord and I think this makes sense. Overall the system is very flexible, and modders can easily change the flags and flag definitions and even define which subject types can have the flag of an overlord

If you're GB or a few other nations you get those. But not every nation can their overlord flag attached to underlings. For example South Africa. Can have a flag modified by its overlord, but doesn't have flags for being an overlord to others.

Thanks mate, still weird though, for example I played two different games as italy, puppeted Yemen, in one it gave them a canton (which wasn't even my flag it was just white) and in the other it changed nothing

The white one was this flag[vic3.paradoxwikis.com], right? That's an example of a country which gets a special flag when they are a subject. But it should display the flag of the overlord there. I have no idea why it didn't work in the case of Italy. When it changed nothing, it was probably because you had one of the italian flags which are configured to not modify the subject.

That reminds me, is there a mod that sets all nations to be able to have a canton on them? it will make my life oh so much more fun
