what's the reason for a trade route to be inactive?
And should i just cancel the trade route or just wait until it becomes active again?

Usually war. Either your being blockaded or they are.

Usually it’s just being lazy.

It never had the makings of a varsity athlete.

War, blockaded or insufficient clippers for the export/import. Also it could be that you don't have enough of the resource you're trying to ship.

or the route is not profitable.

It is also the case that trade routes become inactive when a nation is no longer interested in your region and simply leaves, effectively ending all trade routes you may have had with them.

If it's telling you it is inactive and you're not at war, you should cancel it. No use spending the extra paperwork for nothing.

The trade route doesn't go inactive just because it's unproductive. It goes inactive when the trade route is still established but it stops trading, from war, embargo, lost market access, or the other nations stopped producing the good you're importing.

If a good in a market suffers a 'Not enough' debuff (red box in a circle on icon) exports drop to zero giving importer the message OP is referring to.

actually the main reason why your trade routs become inactive is not war or embargos (that is rare)

its that the country you were trading with doesnt share any diplomatic interests with you

my best example is with belgium

you start with declared interest on iberia, and you start with a trade route of silk with spain

so, when i finally pass colonization as an institution, and change my one and only interest away from iberia to west africa
the moment interest in iberia disappears, that silk trade route turns grey and inactive

because spain doesnt have any direct interests where i as belgium have
