So do I need to provide all food types?
Hello all,

Poking around the various tabs, I came across the "applications" part.

When I look at groceries for example, it is a basic food, which can be substituted for grain, fish, meat, or fruit.

My original gameplan was working on getting all these food products for my people. But because many of these are substitutable for each other, does that mean if I have a grain surplus, for example, I don't need to worry so much about the other basic foods? Or should I work on producing all?

Not really. I have highest standards of living by far in my game, with my lower strata living better than middle class in majority of the world and I don't even supply any fish to my market. Just to give you an example. You may want some variety and luxury items like wine to speed up the process of raising quality of living. But having everything is not a requirement. People just shouldn't be starving. Early in the game ample supply of cheap grain is all you need to keep pops fed.

Caramel , do you always choose Wheat farm over cattle ? I have so far balanced the two because I wasn't sure .. So you are saying if you give only cheap grain to your market, they don't need meat, fish etc.. ?

Fish to me is not part of the same "Arable land" limit so I would do it no matter what, but between farm and cattle I wasn't sure... what the min-max choice :D

You can hover over the good and it will tell you who's buying it (for example, lvl 1 -10 wealth shopkeepers), what group it's in (basic foodstuff) and what the substitutes are (grain = rice = fish = 1/2 grocery item or something like that). So you can sub out between the groups. What the pops care about is "basic foodstuff" and not grain.
Livestock produces fertilizer, farms consume fertilizer. Sure, you can produce fertilizer with chemical plants, but explosives are much more valuable and needed for your mines and military.

Am I overlooking something or is it impossible to supply wine in large numbers? Grain farms only give a pityful amount and unlike liquor there seems to be no other way to get the stuff.

you will need 2 types of goods to fully satisfy a demand, as a pop wont satisfy their demand fully with one good but up to 80%.
Different strata have different food/consumption wants. It will tell you when you hover over the name of the good as to what building type it is produced in, and what it is an ingredient to for other goods, but it does also say who consumes it.

For instance, liquor is more the lower strata, wine more the higher strata, and it will give you precise numbers on the bottom and top of the strata range as to who uses that good.

You don't have to directly produce it yourself though... manually pick import route (instead of just 'most profitable imports') and you can bring it in that way. Sometimes it will be the most lucrative import if you are missing a ton of it, but in other cases, if it's just to please a strata, you may have to manually import it through the import route button instead of just looking at that top set of lists.

@Diesel well youre correct in one thing: not enough wine to satisfy luxury drinks by just wine. but you can supply your market other substitutes like tea or coffee. pops wont satisfy their need fully by kust consuming wine (even if you had enough wine) since they only use one good to satisfy 80% of their need at max.

Wheat farms and cattle farms go well together hand in hand. Meat has 1.5 multiplier compared to grain. But it's important to remember that both types of farms produce other things than basic food. So just to feed pops on the cheap - grain does it perfectly fine. But you might want other things.

This is very interesting - so for example grain and fish or groceries and meat (for example) and that will take care of the basic food needs for the lower strata pops?

Is this written in the game or where is this from? It's great info and I didn't realize.

This is really great info, but not quite what I'm asking. The question is, do I need provide all the "basic foods" (grain fish groceries etc.) Or is it enough to provide just one or two of them to keep people happy, since one of the tool tips suggestions they can be substituted for one another?

The wiki is actually a great source of info on this, I've just discovered.

https://vic3.paradoxwikis.com/Needs

It talks about the different need types and value of goods for sol.

oh thank you .. so much .. the wiki is just perfect.. love you Oaks.

Ah nice. I was aware that's it better to have multiple goods for each needs group, but did not know about that 80% threshold.

Yes, there should be Vineyard building or something, to boost wine (and fruit?)
