Isolated states and how to resolve that problem
So I colonized for the first time in a distant location and, of course, this is an isolated state. I would assume that the solution would be to build a port... but this is grayed out.

Anyone figured out what is required to do so?

I got a port AND a railroad in South Madagascar and the game still doesn't realize it could now use the port to connect the markets.

Came for the 80 coal mines... and stayed with nowhere to move it to despite port and railroad and <100% use of infrastructure.

Madagascar is a trap, go for Zulu, it has just as many coal mines and if you get it early enough, you can conquer the nations north of south africa before they have their gold rush AND maybe even colonize the split states too to get in on their gold rush as well. It has saved my economy.

I cut a major 60 Pound per employee trade route to China consisting 1600 convoys. Afterwards South Madagascar WORKED and connected.

The problem is the game doesn't show the cost. It still says 0 cost for connection of sea provinces.

It is not 0. However I am also not an independent market, I am with Germany as Finland. In short this means there is some bug with not being primary market owner and showing convoy sea lane use for colonies and oversea territories.

Great Q&A PDX...

Q&A assumes they cared about putting out a finished product, they had no intention of completing the game, and now we get to watch as they remake it over and over like they should have done beforehand and the fans expect us to thank them for the privilege

I play Paradox since EU III and Victoria 2. I don't expect high quality from them on release in all regards.

However I expect the UI to correctly tell me what to do. I don't like guessing. I am fixing all problems the game has thrown at me. I would prefer to pre-empt those though. Which I can not if the game hides half the info from be by bug or neglicience.

Imperator was the most polished game PDX released in the last years. And they axed its rework over pulling developers to Victoria 3. What did those developers do there then?

Are you setting an interest in the market you want to participate in?
Thamalandis Nov 4, 2022 @ 6:27am
Any region you got 1 state in you automatically gain as interest region. You don't need to set it. This is only important for relation improvement, plays and trade agreements.

Hahahaha, you are expecting this game not to sabotage you by hiding information or stonewalling you behind layers of meaningless popups? that's something I've learned you will not find in vicky 3, i've had to look up game guides online to find the friggin definition of TRADE UNIONS aka a major game mechanic when it comes to trade and diplomacy...but why would they want you aware of how things work when they don't intend to leave them as they are? That would require them to have done the job right in the first place.

Trade Unions are worker groups. You mean Customs Unions.
argentus Nov 4, 2022 @ 6:46am
That yes, i keep calling them trade unions because they only happen to take over player trade, and paradox made damn sure we couldn't have ways to get the AI into our customs unions...then we might have a, *gasp* advantage
Thamalandis Nov 4, 2022 @ 6:47am
You can get the AI into your custom unions, you force them to be your subject. Those auto join your union.
argentus Nov 4, 2022 @ 6:51am
That's something the game punishes you for by adding more infamy on, while if you get obligations from the AI, you can't get them in a custom union with you, but you can get an RNG dependent event to maybe boost a party or steal a leader, because why would they ever want us to decide when we want to do that on our own? the game should be deciding that for us clearly
Thamalandis Nov 4, 2022 @ 6:54am
Obligations are favors in EU IV. It is just a currency to repay or be repaid between nations without a direct physical benefit.

If the AI owes you a favor it may take over your loans or bankroll you. It may join your war for free etc.

A customs union is literally giving up supremacy over tariffs and import policies. No self-respecting state in the Top 16 would do that.

Yes you can still chose with whom you trade, but not what tariff to take on the items and what to block. Your "friend" can now also eat all your coal. A customs unions can be just as much a benefit as a curse.

I had Russia use all my imported coal to light their street lamps. It is NOT fun if you want to industrialize.
argentus Nov 4, 2022 @ 7:00am
and supposedly you can stop that by embargoing them...but then the game just has someone else buy it from you and teh russians buy it from them, essentially abusing the fact it can control all factions to punish teh player.
Thamalandis Nov 4, 2022 @ 7:02am
You can not embargo your customs union... and especially not your personal union overlord. Short of being a puppet personal union is the second lowest subject you can be.

If Russia wants my first born all I can offer is a gun if relations are below 20. Which I did.
