Break free as a puppet?

How do I break free from Britain as Cape colony? Or at the very least become a domion of them?

I could be wrong but I think you can ask them (which won't go well unless you're overwhelmingly strong) or try a diplomatic play against them for independence, try to get support from a big nation and hope you can win a war.

Like the americans did.

How do I start a diplomatic play for that? I don't even have the option for that

Usually in the interaction screen of target, meaning Britain.
Maybe your relations are too high? Most aggressive actions are gated behind having low relations.

you need to get their opinion to under 0 and then on the diplo screen you can scroll even more down, there you can find diplomatic plays, it should popup there, if not then try lowering relations some more and check if britain has some diplomatic plays that you are dragged into, can't act while that is going on

As mentioned diplomatic play when at low opinion. Just take care once you gain independence you leave their trade zone and you'll quickly need to fix up your economy.
