How do I turn Socialist/Communist?
As it says on the tin, tried last night to no luck. Tried bolstering trade unions, researching socialism and anarchism early, and so on. But I can't get people to join them to further their power. I know in Vic2 you could use national focuses to make people turn either socialist or communist but I can't figure out for the life of me how to do it in Vicky 3.

Have you been constructing buildings that give the kind of jobs that vote for Trade Unions? The only thing I can think of is to make sure the majority of your populace are within those jobs.

As Britain, I basically civil warred my way through it. My first civil war was against the petite bourgeoisie, devout, and land owners. This was primarily due to an event over switching to a parlimentary democracy after the law failed at like ~80% (the event gave me the option to hang Victoria lol). The civil war died in the diplomacy stage before any actual combat because I basically had all of Western Europe, the US, and my colonies backing me. My second civil war was the same group plus the armed forces who sprung up with them, but they lost quickly. What then happened was that somehow, the rural folk (who had 5% popularity) started the Communist Party instead of my trade unionists (who had 15% popularity). So I did a bit of trolling and basically reformed the government to kick out every other interest group but the rural folk. This ignited my third, and last, civil war that I barely won. Finally, the trade unionists formed the Labor Party that then joined forces with the Communist Party, and we formed the Socialist League. The intelligentsia (who were originally market liberals) became Anarchists and the Armed Forces became Vanguardists (iirc).
All-in-all, a lot funner than HOI4 politics, but it required me to literally ignore everything else in the world.

If you have a dictatorship, you need to first change to a capitalist or republican system, develop the economy, increase the number of workers and capitalists, so that the political power of trade unions and industrialists will increase. You can build up the political power of the unions and choose the committee system. I suggest you choose both communism and planned economy. I can achieve a standard of living of over 20 for 500 million people with communist China

Have more people of the correct profession/class (I think you need more factory workers?)

Give them more power through votes

Shift more wealth (and political power) towards them through welfare

Pass their reforms
