So I dont really get what I'm supposed to be doing. It's 1853 and I'm just micro managing my buildings to make the most money. theres been no wars or expansion and I cant see even how to, the tutorial is pretty useless

If you are a dominion, do a diplomatic play and expand bit by bit towards the Zulus, also eat away at the Boer republics.

Unfortunately Cape Colony starts as a puppet which can’t do its own diplomatic plays.

Is there a way to become a dominion or do you just straight up have to go for Independence?

I had it happen to me by forming Australia with the federation journal task, which was tied to nationalism, but it may be tied to your global ranking

i can't even really see how to make money. I was making a nice sum of money and then started getting charged a ton in military wages and goods. I can't raise taxes too much or I have problems with radicals. and I already have military wages and government wages as low as they go, and have added several consumption taxes.

I had the same problem, I found that it helped to disband some of the military to pay all the bills until my industry got started

Started as Transvaal and after taking the Orange Free State and Zululand, I spent like ten years doing nothing until I just started playing as the U.S. Had I attacked Cape Colony/UK, I was toast, and same with Portugal who was allied with the UK at the time. I feel your pain.

So I found out you can declare independence pretty much at anytime after you have a solid economy (food industry, coal iron and gold mines). The British will always naval invade on your capital so it's pretty easy to beat them up with the massive landing debuff. The big problem is loosing the GB market, your economy crash so hard I went to -834K after winning my independence.

Cape Colony can colonise north without penalty as they have Boer culture if I remember right.

So, get a head start on the European nations by doing that.

Incorporate your states and try and balance the books initially. You'll be fine eventually as Gold Mines should pop up and bankroll you to relative stability. Then it's just a matter of trying to manage your economy within the British market ~ unfortunately, there's no local market data, so you'll not be able to see whether you can sustain yourself if you exit the market via an independence play.

If you want to play for independence, you need to damage British relations and start improving relations with their rivals. France is usually the only one in the area that has interest in helping you out though.
