Is it still hard at the start?

I played this game about ten months ago, wanted to come back to it and see what changed a couple of months ago.... made an elf walked outside the city and there were loads and loads of very strong spiders about...

I was wondering if there is, at this moment, a more or less 'safe' zone to start playing? Nothing a frustrating as starting out and constantly dying because the creatures are too hard.
I prefer to play singleplayer because I won't be playing very often and I don't want to lose my progress because I couldn't log in for a while.

I mean yes and no. If your careful and keep an eye out you should be fine. Believe it not it can actually be safer away from the city.

Thanks for the information :) I really enjoyed the game on a casual level but it's not fun if you get constantly killed before you can really start

Hopefully it wont get dumbed down like ark did, its a surival game, it's meant to be tough imo.

The games difficulty relies on playing on a big server with a larger amount of people with you. Because of that the game is extremely hard to play in solo mode or with just a small group of friends. You really have no way to get far into the game because of how difficult it is to go anywhere without getting killed and then the moment you want to venture out from any type of home you've made you just get killed either way by something you cant kill yet. The game is incredibly flawed because of all this. Your options are either play by yourself and crank up the multipliers as much as you can or play with a bunch of trolls, griefers, or hackers in a bigger server. The game was a lot easier and enjoyable when i first bought it and its just been getting harder and harder since then.

I played on official with my girlfriend for like 4 weeks, the guy with the reply above is vastly exaggerating about the difficulty we have an iron castle and the environment is no longer a threat. You just have to stay near the city in the beginning, u can use the guards for protection and lead enemies chasing you into them, then loot them. And rent an apartment in the city if u tame something and have nowhere to keep it. After u get a few levels up and an iron sword, u can kill weak enemies no problem. U can tame a bargesh or a vulture with spoiled meat very easily, and use them to scout the area and outrun/fly enemies, then get started building ur base.... just dont rush moving out of the city, as much as u might want to.

Some good advice there for newbies, it's something I recall doing at the start, I don't think I left city limits too much the first week accept suicide scout runs on a horse (sometimes I made it back), then if u lucky enough, you will find a nice spot to build on.

Ooh okay :D When i first played this game last summer, I build a base very close to the city and while I had an occasional issue with a monster prowling close.... it was mostly safe. even if it was just out of wood.

It's much easier than what it once was. With the implementation of perks, and the nerfing of creature level around cities, and especially the super hard nerfs to the deathstalkers, it's a bit of a breeze these days.

It seems safer to me, the aggressives near elf town were lower level and fewer in number than before--or maybe I was lucky for my last new character.

We started as dwarves and couldn't find a safe spot anywhere.... we rolled elves and we're fine now :D every now and then a stray creatures comes by, but in general it's a safe environment.

sorry for necro, but ark didn't get dumbed down, it got balanced, surviving the only tough part should be the dinosaurs, food and water however if its too hard it isnt fun, if its too easy it isnt fun, it has to be balanced, imagine if a pack of compys could own you every single time that would suck and people would quit meaning the game has failed to provide a certain fun factor, however in DnL if you leave the difficulty setting at 1.0 then a lvl 72 hyena can just maul your newb ass at a starter zone
