You need to first gather the materials and unlock the skills. You start out with Straw (aka Thatch) then move on to wood etc. I haven't built too much yet just a simple building so far.
You can start making a house as soon as you enter the game.
It works by tiers.
Takes a lot of farming to build something decent.
Works like conan/ark, foundations, walls, roof, doorframe + door, etc..
While it does use realistic physics, aka anything above gets destroyed when you destroy the foundation or pillars, there is some bugs still where some roofs can still be floating without support after destroying the pillars. But that will get fixed in time.
Hope that helps!
This is nothing like Maindcraft. And the Pipes for irrigation will float in the air because of the current game pysics, but that will be corrected later int eh EA.
I am now to the point I am starting to make the Elven Manor pieces. They are so expensive, but well worth it. the Architectur is beautiful and unique. I cannot wait until I am finished with it.

Did they ever release that big patch? How stable is the game now, compared to before?
No idea about the DnL patch yet :)
Building in DnL is nowhere near as forgiving as in Conan. There's no stacking foundations and no placing them just anywhere - you need a lot of very flat land to build anything large.
Devs seem to have enabled collision with foundations or something because the slightest slope or something hidden just under the terrain obstructs them.
I have a lot of hours logged in Conan too and when I found what I thought was a great spot to build in DnL I was disappointed to see that the slight slope near my original building totally prevents me from expanding, and even using columns isn't working because there are things under that slope preventing building entirely.
Who cares about that though when the core gameplay in DnL is far and away better than Conan. I can easily live with more restrictive building when there's actual game content.
I really wish someone would have explained to me how terrible the current state of the servers are. I know the game is Early Access, but during my playtime, I found no bugs, just a completely terrible server latency that left me wishing I could return the game. I guess I have no choice, but to wait a few weeks (or months probably), for the developers to decide that their servers need to operate off something better than Dial Up.
If you want a beter experience, go find a good private server. There you will see that it is quite fun and engaging.
The mobs you are running into, are they Skellingtons and Reapers? If so, there is an event ingame that sends these down with Meateors. About 2 to 6 of the meteors will land around your house at one time, unleashing anywhere from 1 to 4 of them from each meteor. They do not drope too close to town. The event that is, meteors do, but not the event ones. This event will last 30 minutes, with the meteors dropping one after another for 30 minutes. You get some awesome stuff, but it is hell if you are low level.
Built your 1st house really close to the starter city, and be on the lookout for DarkFallen, and Dark Reapers that will roam around the netoer that fall within normal gameplay. They have desigbated places to fall, and the metoers can be blocked from falling if you build where they fall.
The game is quite stable as far as not crashing alot.. it is still VERY VERY Early Access so do not expect polish yet.
If you want a more polished game, go play Citadel and come back to this one once it has been around more than a week lol
You are building in the wrong spot. Move.
Do not build near any meteor drop as the mobs that spawn from it will destroy you and your base, even when you are offline.
If you see heaps of dangerous creatures like Panthers, move. They too will trash your base when offline. The map is huge, lots of safe spots.
Try and find a spot where no one else is around, this means it is less likely that your base gets rendered by a player passing by so no chance for your base to get smashed while offline.
I mentioned offline a lot because if you are having problems while online, you wont have a base when you log on next time.
The desynch issues with the servers suck but it is typical of a game this young unfortunately.
