They added this a long time ago after many people (including myself) complained about chat littering the screen in solo play.
devs pls
This really needs to get done as a default option.
BTW I have never played multiplayer and there is zero chance I ever will. I never want to see lobbies open thank you, especially not the new ones labelled "LLLLLLLLAAAAAAAMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAOOOOOOOOOOOOOO"
The red X does hide chat, but not legion/lobby pop up, or the new lobby sound. So your still gonna get spammed with blue pop ups and a lot of clicking sounds every time someone makes one.
On top of the refer a friend and newsettler locked weapons, this is very very gacha like.
Hate that Sseth didn't mention this at all, its a pretty glaring issue.
Edit: The dev given way of disabling the chat entirely is to press the log out button in the top right, though if I'm not wrong that also locks you out of playing MP with a friend. Something so simple as a hide AND mute button was not thought of, it seems. This also fixes the lobby/legion pop up spam.
Really gets in the way if I have an enemy that direction in co-op, due to how my aim works.
Though I find all this "anti-online co-op" chatter sadly hilarious, given that about oh 95% of the games in this genre don't offer a "real" (not Steam Remote Play) online co-op mode, and people complain bitterly about that or just flat refuse to try many cool top-down/isometric roguelites/roguelikes that are strictly solo play -- such as I, Dracula, Genesis; and Dungeon Core, which are a couple solo-only games in early access that I'm enjoying. But my friends ignore them because of the lack of online play.
This strikes me as maybe the only thread on Steam where people say they don't want to touch online co-op with a socially distanced 6-foot stick. :)
It's just ♥♥♥♥♥♥ behavior that really annoys me more than the dumb chat window.
Also, the co-op works pretty poorly and really feels tacked on even when you aren't getting annoyed by the many bugs and issues, so I wouldn't be surprised it's not a core feature for everyone.
