If you are referring to the explosion of the arma device itself, then you just have to stay away from it during that explosion.
Another thing that comes to mind, you said you completed it, but maybe you confused that with the progress bar of the arma device and instead of winning you lost - which triggers an explosion as well.
And yes, you have to stand somewhat near to it, but hugging it is not necessary. You can tell where you are allowed to be based on the progress bar on top of the screen.
The orange bar is the enemies progress and the red bar is yours. Stepping outside of the hack zone (which is quite large) even for a few seconds can cost the game. You pretty much have to stay in the zone the entire time.
That's why you "win" the game when you beat LD. all the challenges are just beating LD too. Armageddon and loop is just for a couple of achievements really.
I believe this is the case. I didn't die due to picking up any item - I simply killed a ton of enemies until I saw the bar at the top of the screen fill up, and then was chased by explosions. It was the fifth or so time I had made it to that room but the first time I had survived that long, so it was frustrating to see.
From what I have been told since then - apparently you have to stand in a "hack zone" to complete that objective. Of course, the game didn't communicate this in any way at all - it didn't say to stand in the circle, or imply that was a required mechanic. It just said to "stop Armageddon," which at first I thought meant shooting things in the room (which did nothing), and then I thought meant just surviving long enough to win.
That's unfortunate, but confirms what I have been told. I really wish that the game told you that you needed to stay in such an arbitrary circle though, or was more forgiving about it. That stage already is difficult to survive given how many strong enemies spawn in, so it isn't as though I would have had the patience or time to analyze the room and figure out that I needed to stand nearby it.
I'm not at all interested in cheesing the game, either, but thanks for the suggestion.
Well, it's annoying that I have spent hours on runs successfully to that place before I get a hint - only after watching videos online and coming to the discussion board - about how to "actually" complete a stage.
It didn't seem at all like the earlier server hacking mission either. Because in that one, there really isn't any zone outside of the server - so logically I never would have left it, unlike in the stop Armageddon section which is a fairly large stage. I didn't know that for either "boss" you needed to stand near anything!
Same thing happened to me the first time I got to the room, managed to kill everything then died because I stepped away from the arma device for a bit too long.
