I have used this program before, and always loved it, it saves alot of time, where I would scuplt all of my clothes in Zbrush.. Now I still do use Zbrush to get some of the fine detail I really want/need depending on the work i,m doing... But this program saves me hours and hours of sculpting, which is super nice since time = money in this business ....

My only complaint, was the license issue at the start was not clear, which caused my company to miss the sale, we paid full price something I rarely do... also support not that impressed right now, so far I feel one of the support dev seem a little rude, and was saying I was insisting on not scaling my character properly when in fact , it was an import issue in this program..causing me issues... so I was forced to use the default setting, which caused the character to not scale.. right..

I did rescale him, which caused me more bugs, so I ran in to some more issues, which I did fix on my own after waiting over 2 days for a reply, still waiting..So I think some of this needs to be addressed.. I still think people should buy this as it will save you a lot of time, and money at the end of the day.. I been using Zbrush for a long time now.



EDIT: Support is not good at all, and not helpful at all, and they ignore you and DO NOT REPLY All OF THE TIME...... So if you want support GOOD LUCK....

Marvelous Designer is software for 3d clothing creation. If you've ever created clothing for a 3d animated character, you're likey aware of the challenges of doing so. MD makes this process *much* easier.

Pros:

• Intutive workflow (very much like working with sewing patterns)
  
• Produces clean topolgy and UVs
  
• Good quality simming (uses multicores as well)
  
• Imports and exports to a wide variety of object and animation cache formats
  
• Technical Support is quick and responsive (Based off my experience using enterprise version 4 and 5)

Cons:

• Mac version tends to be a bit buggy (Based off my experience using enterprise version 4 and 5 on PC and Mac)

Other notes:

• This software is geared primarily for production 3d animation. You can use it for game dev, but you'll likely want to reduce the poly count further and/or bake from a higher res mesh to lower.
  
• You'll need a resonably powerful machine to use this effectively.
  
• If you currently sculpt clothes in place over a model and don't need to rig, animate, or sim, you may not need this.
  
• No additional licensing management is used other than Steam, which is a nice touch.
  
• The normal price point might seem steep for some, but is pretty much in line with most 3d and VFX software. There's also very little, if any, other products for 3d clothing modelling. The steam price for personal use is a good deal.

95% pretty ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ awesome.

Pros:

Not many other programs like it.
Massive time sink (fun to use)
95% of the time, it works very well.

Cons:
(Even with what I'm about to say I'm very happy with my purchase, and you should know these things before you plunk down a lot of cash.)

You cannot make real-world patterns that can be made into actual clothing. The system is MUCH more forgiving than real world and it doesn't take grading and costing into account. It is really meant more for games although it CAN be used as a conceptual stage to convey your ideas to your real world patternmakers.

It's a little rough around the edges, and this is what hurts the most. (minor annoyances in major places such as occasionally janky manipulation gizmos, unexpected behaviours like when you use the separate QWE gizmo, the Q key never works, axial snapping of points sometimes prioritizes snapping to the pattern outline rather than an intersection of the axis and outline, etc.)

This sounds like nitpicking but when you have to deal with repeated operations and there are flaws in those areas it makes it stand out.

It's like eating a chocolate cake that is 95% chocolate cake, and 5% broken glass.
Or it's like going on a long hike in a beautiful place with a little sharp rock in your shoe.
Or a paper cut on the inside joint of your index finger.
Or a cold sore inside your nose.
Or fantastic sex with a paper cut on yer privates.

Doesn't use GPU to simulate (this may be because it is difficult to get consistency of simulation between GPUs but what do I know). It does use your GPU to render, though.

Using this program is like trying to master a temperamental musical instrument. If you want to get a certain effect, you're going to have to try several different ways and many of them will blow up in your face and you'll just have to persevere until you find the one way that works best. It's a highly complex fabric simulator, after all, and it takes a lot of experimentation over a period of time to learn all the ins and outs of how fabric behaves and folds.

The more you work with the software, the more of these methods you'll uncover, and the people who get the best results are true virtuosos who had to struggle and bleed to get where they were.

But what the hell I still love this program and that's just what makes the bad things stand out more.


LIST OF THINGS YOU SHOULDN'T DO in MD 6
(not bagging on the software, this is just a warning of things that you shouldn't attempt under the current state of technology. Maybe MD 8 will achieve this. These are just some last minute DON'Ts to save beginners some aggravation and disappointment.)

- Do not make humongous pieces of fabric. The software will dutifully attempt to tesselate a massive object with a lot of polygons and the software will hang before depleting all your memory. This software does not come with guardrails!

- Do not attempt to tie knots and bows. Intimate fabric-on-fabric interaction in confined spaces is janky at best. I tried to tie a windsor-knot with a faithfully-constructed 2-ply business tie and had to give up 2 hours later.

Instead, construct 'fake ties' and 'fake bows' with multiple loopy pieces of fabric and save yourself the hassle. Nobody will know the difference.

- Do not attempt to make origami with the software. Tight and precise folds are not the forte of the program and your creation will explode into jelly after the 2nd crosswise fold.

-Do not attempt to knit a yarn sweater. Jesting aside, use textures to deal with teeny weeny and/or repetitive details whenever possible. Same goes for stuff like skintight gloves. Expect ALL fabric to have some degree of thickness, especially if you want to avoid your avatar poking thru the clothing.

- Do not attempt to create towering structures. It's a fabric simulator. Fabric is bendy. Did you ever hear about the fourth little piggy who made his house out of fabric? It collapsed on his sorry ass and he asphyxiated before the wolf even showed up and that's why nobody ever mentioned him.

You can, however, make an enclosed object and turn up its "pressure" to stuff it full of air. Then you can divide it into different fabrics and make some of those fabrics completely transparent, making it seem as if the other fabrics are completely unsupported.

- Do not make balloon animals. Well you can, but only with multiple balloons. If you try to make a long one and twist it into a poodle it will collapse into jellywobblebackfacedmadness.

- Resist the urge to do too much with a single piece of uncut cloth. At some point it gets really difficult to mentally deal with which way things should wrap and the system will keep recalculating that big piece of cloth which translates to slow edits and lots of timesinking. Just use smaller pieces at first and then merge them at the final stage.

-The system cannot handle tight crumpling (like when you crumple up a sheet of paper into a ball) as this will cause interpenetration and a jelly mess.

- Avoid bunching up fabric or trying to use stretchy elastics to pull the fabric into concave regions like armpits and crotches as this always invites a lot of collision glitching. Form-fitting clothing is really difficult to create in the program for things like corsets because of this.

- It cannot handle compression folding (Fold up a sheet and jam it into a crevice) - again, interpenetration occurs and you get another jelly mess.

- The system doesn't handle laminates well (like if you try to stitch together multiple layers of fabric like a piece of plywood) -- again, interpenetration follows and jelly wiggle wobbly bill cosby

- Don't try and trace an existing pattern and expect it to fit well on your model. You should tailor each piece of fabric and test it on your model INDIVIDUALLY, make adjustments so that it fits perfectly before moving on. Build your outfits piece, by piece.

-Elasticity is both a friend and an enemy. While it can allow clothing to stretch and adjust to fit a model, it also means that it will introduce inaccuracy between what you see on the pattern and what you see on the model. The dynamics of elastics makes it so that you have to compensate for them to make things fit perfectly. I generally try and set up my clothing to me quite rigid and unyielding at first while I'm trying to get the clothing to fit. I add elasticity at the very end in just the few areas I need it.


COMMANDMENTS:

1: Thou shalt not invite interpenetration by tightly mashing things together or twist or crumple them.

You only can loosely allow for layers to collide (like if you wore a jacket over a sweater, or a sweater over a t-shirt).

2: Thou shalt not expect fabric to stay smooth without tension. You must either stretch fabric over something (like the avatar), let gravity pull on a loose end, or create a pressurized enclosure.

3: Thou shalt not expect fabric to stay in one place without stitching, elastic internal lines or adequate support. The fabric will stretch and gravity will have its way so you must lash things in place lest thine garment drift and cause wardrobe malfunction.

4: If Thou cans't do it in another program more easily, THEN DO IT.

MD works best with LOOSE DRAPERY so always be on the lookout for situations that force the clothing against the avatar. If you have jewellery, footwear, skintight articles, rigid pieces like hairbands then do those in a dedicated modelling program and save yourself a losing fight!

Remember, use MD for LOOSE FABRICS and it will shine. Use your OTHER programs to do the things that shine in them.

MD is NOT a catch-all one-stop-shop program for clothing design. It is very powerful and it can do a lot of things that other programs can't, but that doesn't mean that it can do everything that the other programs can! If you keep this in mind, you will find MD an indispensable and excellent part of a larger development pipeline.

Writing this quick review again because apparently, my last one wasn't counted by steam. (sorry in case it's a double post)

So it's a commercial unlimited license (personal) which seems good enough for me at this price for sure barring any bad surprise down the line.

This software is really easy to use, you will get the basics quickly, there are many tutorials on youtube and vimeo just in case anyway. It will unlock new perspective for your character creation, I would say a must have.

The only bad point so far, is that it don't seems to use CUDA/OpenCL gpu acceleration for simulating, so it will rely on your CPU only for this, which mean you better have a good cpu unlike me...

I totally love marvelous desinger 6, it makes it so much easier to create clothing, and it makes it more fun. Personally I'd rather construct environments than endlessly sculpting/modelling clothing. But marvelous desinger 6 makes it fun. It does require you to have some decent specifications in your computer. And it's defenitly not a thing you know in seconds.

But is it worth buying? yes.

I'd tried Marvelous Designer 4 about a year ago, and loved it. So when I had the money, I bought this one, only to find that 1: I can't actually move the fabric like I'm supposed to be able to,
2: the tutorials and manuals for it are mostly for versions 2 and 3 (which were hard enough to apply to v4, and completely different from v6),
3: When I asked the company if they planned to update the manuals, they suggested I check the versions 2-3 manuals
4: when I told them I couldn't move the fabric, they apparently checked, then told me there was an answer on MyPage (on their website). I checked, and couldn't even read all of my problem, let alone the answer they'd supposedly posted right after it (in the same post).
5: repeated attempts to ask them for help either got an 'answer' on MyPage where I can't read it, or told to check the v2-3 manuals & tutorials, ignoring that I already had tried.
6: Somewhat minor detail; version 4 allowed me to change the avatar I was building the clothing over, detailing the features, build, and skin tone fairly well. This version was supposed to allow the same, but I only have the choices of 'bulky male', 'slender male', or 'female in one of 3 skin tones'.

The program, as originally used, is wonderful. I'd hoped the updated version, with more features, would be even better, but so far, it's a complete waste of money.

I love this program. I mean not as much as Blender but.... I have a soft spot for this marvelous application.

I'm mostly interested in marvelous for creating soft goods to populate scenes. I like the combination of real world pattern making / tailoring with physics to quickly make variations that feel appropriate within the context. It lets me spend more time on the parts that I enjoy sculpting.

Paul Liaw's Cloth Modeling Pipeline on the Gnomon Workshop has really made the program more approachable and useful early on.

I've been eyeing this software for a few years. I had only prevously rented for about a month to test it out. My main goal was to use this for making clothing for my game characters and using things like ZBrush and manual modling too extrememly too long to do. This program is so easy and so wonderful to use. Along with the free things from CG Elves and their video tutorials I learned so much in about a day of learning. I highly recommend this.

Alot of people may say a few things about the lisence but for my I am one person trying to make awesome things, i dont have a company or anything like that so the lisence is not an issue to me. Plus it looks like they are looking to rephrase the lisence currently so in the end i think everyone will have some closure.

I have created my first outfit and I love it. I can't wait to use it some more.

What can I say, this software is great. And in conjunction with other software (zbrush, Blender, Substance painter for texturing, etc), it create a strong workflow and is a huge time saver.
Is easy to use, but of course takes a some time to get used to it, specially understanding how the clothes patterns (in real life) should work.
I am making clothes for my game characters using Unreal Engine 4 and everything is going nice.
Recommended.
