Ambush?
I've successfully ambushed two different groups. Both had one enemy with two "?" as the other enemies. One was an encampment and the other one was on a pirate ship. Both times one of my party members went first (as usual) then the three enemies went.

My understanding was that if you successfully ambushed a fight the other two enemies don't show up? Was it because it I ambushed a camp and a pirate ship and not an enemy by itself?

You're right :-)

If you manage to ambush an enemy only the enemy or enemies on that hex will be in the fight. If you fail or don't try an ambush all enemies (up to 3) in the area will be pulled into the fight.
Also, the character that did the successful ambush always goes first - it's an ambush after all. If you ambush a camp (or ship) you will have all enemies there (since they are on the same hex) but still get in the first hit.

However, if you fail to ambush then the enemy will always go first. If you have a very fast char they might go first without the ambush, but not with a failed one.

The same goes if one of your party gets ambushed by an enemy. They go first, no other characters than the one who was ambushed. Not 100% sure on the very last part of that.

To add on to ajfusch, if you mouse over an enemy which you can fight this turn, you can see what the 'pull range' is. This applies to pulling in both allies, and enemies. Many things can effect pull range, such as the trait 'support range,' the zone youre in, the current weather condition, and the day/night cycle.

If you fail an ambush, the enemies get a free turn instead of the characters. And yes, if a character gets ambushed, they have to solo fight.
