Focus always turns the first slot into a hit, which is the same shock will make fail. So 1 Focus is a sure counter against shock.
Also, weapons with less slots have better chances to hit.
By optimal armor you mean good boosts for the relevenant stats I take it? And you combine the armor with the main stats of the chars and give them fitting weapons? So, in apprentice you can easily go up to 95% later in the game... and it doesn't go higher than that. If not, pay attention to that.
As for Fergus - either give all the money to a char with steal immunity or if you don't have that spend all your money on equipment and herbs before you engage him, that way you won't lose it when he runs away.
But if you just killed him - congrats!
When it comes down to it luck - not the stat! - is a big factor though.
