Characters keep missing their attacks but enemies perfect theirs every time
Im at the point of the game that I just killed fergus the mad. While I have been sailing I have been consistently missing my attacks against enemies. Basically they will miss one or two of the symbols every time but the enemies always make all their symbols. What should I do? I have optimal armor. You really can't wait around to get levels because of the way the game works. Is there something I am doing wrong?

Use focus, that's what it's for.

Focus always turns the first slot into a hit, which is the same shock will make fail. So 1 Focus is a sure counter against shock.

Also, weapons with less slots have better chances to hit.

By optimal armor you mean good boosts for the relevenant stats I take it? And you combine the armor with the main stats of the chars and give them fitting weapons? So, in apprentice you can easily go up to 95% later in the game... and it doesn't go higher than that. If not, pay attention to that.

As for Fergus - either give all the money to a char with steal immunity or if you don't have that spend all your money on equipment and herbs before you engage him, that way you won't lose it when he runs away.
But if you just killed him - congrats!

When it comes down to it luck - not the stat! - is a big factor though.

Ideally your party should have a Busker and Minstrel. At the very least a Busker. Busker's passive makes enemies miss some attacks (Distraction) and minstrels make allies guarantee some attacks (Encourage). The busker really shines though because when he does make an enemy miss a roll, its very powerful because the enemy will not only do less damage/miss but they also won't be able to attack with statuses like lightning/fire/frozen/slow if they miss even one roll due to Distraction. Its worth noting that you don't have to have a Busker because there is a trinket called Polly the Parrot and Noisemaker that has "Distraction". But having it guaranteed is really nice. The Hunter is a nice class too because their passive makes 10% of their bow attacks be guaranteed perfect rolls + be a critical hit.

Also try to avoid weapons that have 5 rolls. Unless its late game and you have gear that gives you the 95 stat cap. The less rolls a weapon has the better. There is a weapon called Water Tome that replenishes 3 focus to all allies, which means you can have a lot of guaranteed attacks plus have a way to replenish your focus for out of combat events too.
