I tried the suggestions above that I can (xquartz, opting out of betas, etc) and nothing seems to be working.
I am also running Mavericks if its of any meaning.
This sounds like it's probably just a steam issue altogether rather than with a particular game.
yld Error Message:

"You've actually guessed it right, though I'll wager it's not the answer you were hoping for.
As you are well aware of, OS X 10.10 (Yosemite) and older is no longer supported by Steam. Steam on Mac requires at least OS X 10.11 ("El Capitan") or higher.
Your Steam account, as well as any associated games and purchases will continue to be accessible through all supported platforms. If you continue to use OS X 10.10 or older the client may remain functional and accessible for a time, however should you experience any technical issues we will be unable to provide support while using this OS."
If you don't plan to update your OS now for some reason, as I do, we are probably out of luck.
They don't give a damn about anyone not fitting in their plans. Steam will most likely not even care to provide a simple way to run your legitimate purchased games in a "legacy" offline mode. How hard would it be for them? Let me guess: too much trouble to please a small bunch of whining retrograde mac users, not worth it from their perspective I suppose.
Ah well, thanks for your post, I also tried the XQuartz update that was mentioned earlier but that didn't work either.
I guess the only option is to update...
However, you need to manually go in the Steam preferences, under the Account tab, you have to opt-in for the Steam BETA update.
Steam client will restart and auto update. And VOILA, all my games are back. Thank you Steam for your consideration, although I'm not sure how long it will be until this breaks again. it would be nice if Steam would let us know in advance before forcing an update that breaks everything so I could switch to offline mode and take an indefinite dive in a pre-Y2K era simulation at least until I resort to either get a new machine or update to more modern OS.
I am running under Mac OS 10.9.5 (Mavericks ) on MacBook Pro 2013.
This fix did not work for me, still dealing with Steam customer support to find another solution...will keep this thread updated.
Hopefully this works for everyone else too!
EDIT: Problem seems to be all gone, I can open games!
