Unfair encounters?
I was just playing and some goblin thing ambushed me took nearly 300 gold and then left, all without me being able to do anything. I was playing the blacksmith, is it intentional to be that way? It actually frustrated the hell out of me due to me not being able to do anyhting to prevent it. I guess im just salty though.

It is one of the many random things that make this game such a challenge (and fun imho)... I rolled bad earlier today and critically shattered my (at the time) favorite weapon.. then lost some healing herbs in some grass... fun times. My advice about theives is to not use one character as the bank.. and spend gold as fast as you earn it.

Yeah some enemies will steal/destroy items and gold from you. If you kill a mob that steals from you the items that were stolen will be returned.
There are a number of thief type characters that will use their steal skill on you. If you kill them before they flee you get your gold back. If you have a shield with taunt you can taunt to force them to attack you rather than flee and then kill them with your other characters. There are some exceptions to the rule were enemies like fire demons destroy your gold. If you are worried about it there are a number of items that give you steal immunity. You can always have 1 character with steal immunity and then just bank everything on him.

See the thing is that I couldnt do anything, I didnt get a turn to taunt or fight back. On his first turn he ran away, so I pretty much got to watch a 30 second clip of losing 300 gold.
Then all of your characters were really slow. Thieves often have high speed which grants them high initiative (faster turn speed). So their first turn they could steal, and their second turn they could flee before you get your first turn... If you were around 70 speed they might get to attack first and use steal, but you’d likely get an attack before they got their second attack which you could use to taunt to lock them into battle. If you had a bunch of blacksmiths with 52 speed and then threw on some strength boots (i.e. iron greaves +6 armor +4 strength – 3 speed) and dropped your speed even lower then too bad you were unprepared for the many thief fights you will encounter in the game (like every 3rd fight) and you paid the price. If you’re going to be a slow clumsy guy then you need to wear something with steal immunity (e.g. Silver Padlock, Bandit King Helm, Lucky's Hat, The Uniforn, Thieve’s Armor, etc. there are a lot of options) or get the grand sanctum of wealth. Prepare or suffer the consequences.

Oh man you just assumed a whole lot. My partner was just barely out of range so they couldnt help and my blacksmith had 55 speed which I dont think is too bad for one. I played the game for about an hour and a half and only fought three theifs and never had one just pop in and out like that. Im fairly new to the game and am still getting a hang of it so the only real good advice you gave me without sounding like a complete jerk was finding something with steal immunity. So thanks for the help.

Ambush immunity is also helpful in this situation, since the enemy doesn't get the extra initiative. Even flee is useful in this situation, if your character managed to dodge the first attempt. But honestly none of that is necessary, losing items or gold really isn't that big of a deal.

The game gives you enough time to grind enemies for equipment and gold assuming you are proactively dealing with the chaos and not progressing the story. Progressing the main objectives can sometimes be detrimental because the price of services and shop are inflated each phase of the story. So take your time and do -1 chaos quests and cult devices, you'll have lots of time to prepare yourself for each new main objective.
Well if someone is a jerk because they don’t pander to you and support you that everything is unfair when it happens to you then life’s going to be real hard for you… Increase speed, taunt, steal immunity items or sanctum, work with your team, increase damage, target thieves before other monsters when fighting groups, make one character the stash, etc. I cover a lot of techniques to cope with the problem, informed you of how it happens often, how to prevent it, how to reduce its chance of happening, how to cope with it when you failed to prevent it, and how there are exceptions to the rule with certain monsters. Stop being a baby.

I clearly stated that I was just being salty. I wasnt asking for you to pat my head and cheer me up, I just wanted to know ways to help/prevent it. However you decided to show your ugly side, to which Ive discovered is your only side. Everyone else has given answers without being rude. Thanks for trying though.
Soo.. wait till you are sailing along and get the "Large Wave" encounter... if the controlling character fails the challenge they lose all the gold they are carrying over the side... make sure you click on your gold icon of the controlling character and move to another on the boat if you are using one as the bank (I have the Leprechan hat which stops thefts so the wearer is my bank).

Hello. There are times when thieves, rat like creatures, leprechaun mobs/enemy will appear during your travels (usually when you are moving/taking your turn) they will pop up. When you are in multiplay, you dont have a choice but to select the defend option. Encounter starts, they always go first (even if you have a speed of 95) they steal and then flee, all on their turn. So far only two options can counter this, immunity to steal and or immunty to ambush. Its a random ambush so you dont know which character will be targeted. Those with immunity to steal, luck out, wont lose any gold, while those with gold will lose a lot or all the gold that was taken (if its under 600 gold, seems there is a max to how much they can steal/take).
On solo play you have option to not select the defend option (exit game, reload last save).
As for ocean travels, you can do the hand off to next person method before starting your turn/move. Give your gold to the previous person who just ended their turn before you move.
Also having a high evasion helps when they pop up (when you have to use the defend option).
Having decent/high evasion also helps when they pop up. Evasion (if RNG is in your favor) can help negate the steal (but your evasion rolls wont hold out much longer).

Too much random causing too much frustration. Why does the mad leprechaun disappear every time his health gets low and next battle, he's full health again?
