Level Up
I only played for a short time, so I might be missing something, but I just leveled up and it seems I can't level up my character and it's done automatically? So you can't put points in attributes in this game? Sometimes I wonder why they would go through all the troubles of making a game like this and not implementing something as essential as this. Unless there's another mechanism that I haven't seen that counterbalances this?

Cuz the way I see it, I can't specialize a Hunter into a melee dagger build, can't specialize a Blacksmith into a tanky healer, etc. It kind of ruined the game for me if I can't specialize my characters.

True. All you get for leveling up is more hit points and healed up to full (an important thing to remember in game). Setting attributes is all about the items you equip to the character. The characters class/profession sets the default attributes. Each class has a key attribute that is better than the other classes except for hobo and monk. You can add items to shift the better attributes to a point, but you are better off sticking to one of the top two attributes of each class as you go. If not you will be sacrificing hit chance over the long haul and reduce your chances of winning the game.

There is no skill tree or attributes to pick via level up. You specialize a character through the gear primarily, but can also gain skills by paying a trainer (speed, awareness, talent, etc), succeeding at a water well (evasion, armor, resistance, focus, etc.), and by eating consumables such as black candy (physical damage boost), spirit taffy (magic damage boost), rouge’s brew (evasion boost), salt water jawbreaker (armor boost), honeyed sponge (resistance boost). It’s possible to fully customize a character, it’s just more challenging in this game than your run of the mill MMO. It’s more of an Easter egg hunt for the primo loot than it is a grind fest to reach the next level.
