Death Pool = Dead Game
For the King is generally a frustrating game, but mostly in a fun way. Like "How do we overcome this?" type of frustrating.

However, the fact that death is permanent after you run out of hearts is insane. This aspect alone made us quit the game.

This is simply a bad design choice. It turns what should be a fairly challenging light hearted game into an anxious making stress fest. One that forces the paranoid player to force quit the game in the middle of the fight just to avoid a death tax.

I realize you can raise your death pool to 9, this only delays the inevitable death stroke.

The game was fun, but just like my characters, it is now dead to me.

Just accept your dead, use your lore book to your advantage for your next playtrough. This is how i enjoy this game

No, this is a rogue-like design choice, which is what this game is. Sure the multiplayer aspect makes things different, but if death wasn't eventually permanent, what else would they be able to do so the game wasn't just 'fart around until you win'?

The designers obviously saw an issue with the mechanic, which is why they allow you to increase/decrease the amount of hearts you can start with. They just decided that the game needed to have perma death instead of letting players select an option that would make their personal experience more enjoyable.

It's essentially like selecting "easy mode." Sure YOU might not need easy mode, but some people enjoy the more casual feel of it.

If the games dead to you why carry on complaining?

Permadeath give's the game it's replayability. However this game is not a casual game to be played by anyone, I'll admit. It's not the life pool or permadeath that makes this game different, but what is required to see it through to the end(s). You'll need a group willing to do a bit of math, analyse situations, plan solid strategies and adapt to unforeseen situations. Players need to share all resources in an selfless manner and discuss what needs to be done to overcome problems. Discipline and teamwork are key factors. A downside to this is that there are almost no games open to randoms, as it's a guarantee to fail.

Our group enjoys this technical gameplay and we find it very relaxing. There are still many bugs that need fixing and saving multiple sessions would be great to have. Updates could be more frequent. Apart from that, some of the best $20 I've spent on Steam. It's not a bad game, maybe just not what you had anticipated. I get that a lot frorm other games ;)
