No, this is a rogue-like design choice, which is what this game is. Sure the multiplayer aspect makes things different, but if death wasn't eventually permanent, what else would they be able to do so the game wasn't just 'fart around until you win'?
It's essentially like selecting "easy mode." Sure YOU might not need easy mode, but some people enjoy the more casual feel of it.
Permadeath give's the game it's replayability. However this game is not a casual game to be played by anyone, I'll admit. It's not the life pool or permadeath that makes this game different, but what is required to see it through to the end(s). You'll need a group willing to do a bit of math, analyse situations, plan solid strategies and adapt to unforeseen situations. Players need to share all resources in an selfless manner and discuss what needs to be done to overcome problems. Discipline and teamwork are key factors. A downside to this is that there are almost no games open to randoms, as it's a guarantee to fail.
Our group enjoys this technical gameplay and we find it very relaxing. There are still many bugs that need fixing and saving multiple sessions would be great to have. Updates could be more frequent. Apart from that, some of the best $20 I've spent on Steam. It's not a bad game, maybe just not what you had anticipated. I get that a lot frorm other games ;)
