That said, two characters get to take more gold each than three, and can upgrade themselves quicker etc, so maybe it balances out. Its nice to have this option without doing the typical Player 1 Takes the Herbalist Crutch as a 3rd teammate.
If playing on Apprentice, I imagine its very balanced. Journeyman I imagine the early game is a bit tougher.
Exp gain is noticeably faster too. Playing a master game now with 3 and the progression seems to be more or less the same, although this could be due to the level scaling.
I'd love to try a one man game, but without weapon swapping in combat it can spell certain doom if you come up to an enemy with high resistance to your damage type
