Can you play local and online coop together?
Is it possible to do 3-person coop with two people on one PC and the third player on a different one?

Local coop mode is different than online multiplayer mode. Seperate games and saves. I would say no.

You are correct: you cannot mix them.

Really? Because we definitely use to do this. Unless it was patched out, you just had to launch a normal Online Game, and press start on the controller, whilst one of you used the mouse/keyboard. Maybe that was just two inputs and one player... It was before there was a chatbox, and I remember couch cooping and loudly discussing "what the hell is the third guy doing" with my mate...

Edit: I dont think we were just round robining... I dont think I could control his char, but I cant quite recall.

I used to do this also. Two people playing locally on hosts pc (one keyboard / mouse + one controller) and friend joining online . alternatively you could hotseat with just the keyboard / mouse. Not sure why developer said it's not possible unless he thought OP meant LAN + online together

Edit: we had to make sure controllers were on and after starting an online game the 2 chars assigned to host in char select were controlled separately

Can verify that you can. Just did 2 players on one machine and a third on a remote machine. Like said above, just hit start in the controllers to get the second player in on the first machine. Yay! :)
