Trapper - counter attack skill

Do you have to do something to trigger using the counter attack skill of the trapper? Do you have to block/evade, or have a certain type of weapon equipped? I just died at the end of act 2 using her but I never saw her use counter attack so I was wondering if I wasn't using a proper weapon or shield. She did get attacked plenty, most of all my people in fact, but never used that skill.

Nope, the counter attack skill is just confusingly named. The skill allows you to not get ambushed in the overworld converting an enemy ambush to a normal encounter.

Yeah I justify it as being one of the few things about the trapper that is just mediocre. That elite ambush and trap disarm is useful enough on their own I'd have a hard time not using a trapper if the counter attack also worked in combat.
