What's this like two-player?
Thinking of buying this on sale for my brother and I (both have Rifts and are reasonably keen on Trek) but I'm wondering what it's like playing as a duo when the game is obviously built more around four players. Can you even play this way? If so how does it work? Any feedback would be welcome, thanks.

I've actually not played anything but solo with AI manning the other stations and have had mixed results, but honestly if I had one other person to man the helm I bet it would be great!

The AI for the engineering and tactical stations seem to be fairly adept at the things you ask of them, but the AI pilot is garbage. You can only select one target at a time and tell it to engage, approach, avoid, and all that, but that's it.

If you're trying to get to a ship that needs rescuing but there's a mine in the way, there's no way to tell the AI to fly around the mine on the way to the ship. In fact, you can't even plot a course directly, you can only tell the pilot to navigate to, or away from, targetable items in space such as anomalies, ships, stations, and mines. But, if you had a friend manning the helm, then it would be no sweat!

Anyway, that's my two cents!

Thanks for the reply. Can you move from station to station or are you locked into helm or captain for the whole mission?

As the captain, you can take over any station you like during single player, so I assume it'd be the same with two people. The only problem with that is your AI crew will not take orders from you unless you're in the captain's chair so if you take over Engineering, your Tactical officer won't engage any new targets or even raise shields, until you switch back.

OK, so it might be better for one person to be captain and the other to switch roles as and when by the sounds of it.

Actually, it's the other way around: one will be the captain and switch to any AI stations, while the other player sits tight in his or her original station.
Anyway, you can play with only 2 players and the rest will be covered by the AI. Or you can meet other players in a lounge to complete the crew (the best solution, in my opinion). Happy trekking!

If there is a vacancy anyone in any role can take over that position. Helm can take over the A.I. tactical station. Tactical can take over the the A.I. engineering station. Captain can take over helm, etc.

The only caveat is only one person can be captain. Only one person can sit in the big seat. The captain can't go to engineering and ask someone at helm to go to the captain's chair. Aside from that, everyone can move to any vacant spot, and back to their original spot again.

Its completely possible for only two people to successfully operate the ship, but you'll have to jump around the various stations. But opening the lobby up to public will yield better results for you two. While it's on sale though, it's worth the money.

Thanks a lot for the replies - sounds like it is perfectly playable with two then, but would be better with four as long as you all get on.
