In the item description it says that it needs batteries to work. I have them but I can't seem to make it work. :(

totally unhelpful comment. So are we to assume that even though we have a broken flashlight and batteries, since the "broken flashlight" recipe is locked until level 6 workshop, that means our character cant use flashlights at all until it is unlocked in the workshop??

I use the diamond that drops from killing the purple ghost thingie.
to fix the broken flashlight, you need a broken flashlight and batteries and build a workstation to combine the two things in order to get a working flashlight.
