Getting food
I find the cold not as bad. Food i find to be horrible at sustaining. I always die from running out of food.

I have found that mushrooms take too much effort for the little value they give when cooked. But i will still grab them to cook.

The berries are the same as mushrooms, at least you dont have to cook them, but they give so little hunger progress, its easy to tell the rabbits are the key to the hunger on a permanent basis.

Rabbits are really large amount of hunger progress. However I set 2 rabbits traps, and caught 2 rabbits. Then a couple days later i set 6 rabbit traps, and the rabbits just move up to the trap and sit there, right next to the trap. They will never move out from this point. They will never get caught by the trap. The only time they move is if i attack them. But how come the first 2 caught the rabbits, while the others do not?

Is there another consistent food source? And why are the rabbits not getting trapped?

I suggest you hunt deers and when you can hunt wolves

To trap the rabbits chase them into the traps

how do you hunt deer? I usually die of starvation before i can get above level 3 or so, and then i dont have bones to make spear because i havent killed anything.

I almost never eat mushrooms or berries at any portion of the game. Use throwing rocks and stun the animals and melee them down. It's insanely easy.

ive tried chasing them into the traps, but they actually seem to run around the trap

ive stunned them, but usually they run away too fast after a couple hits

Deer...you can walk right up behind them and hit them without using stones at all. Sure it will take longer.

So, here's how you deal with deer - walk/run up behind...hit with a stone...wack a mole twice..let them run off screen (they stop at the end of the screen) rinse repeat...plenty of food. The meat from deer/boar/wolves fill the entire bar and give you a status that keeps the bar full for a short time...there are other types of meat found later in the game that do a slightly better job - though I don't know how rare that meat is and can't get into more detail without spoilers

basically to start off i made a chest killed myself 10 times then i had a stack of energy bars and it made it easy to start off, just rush a bow or a knife then you can take deers and wolves easy using the method above^

I'd say don't waste your time with the knife...get the special item carving knife ( I think is what it's called - goes in the tool slot) and then skip to the bone spear it has farther reach.

Check out the last couple mins of the third part

I show killing a boar and a deer...it's a bit dark though.

Once you get used to the mechanics and the AI patterns (not sure how old you are) but think back to the old nintendo games...just gotta learn patterns in video games. Anyway - it only takes about 2-3 hours to be able to upgrade the shelter/workbench and craft the best peices of armor - make a couple of the best traps...and most things are pretty much cake after that. Though there are a few (spoiler) that can hit you a couple times and kill regardless of the armor. There does appear to be items found in the game that are better than some you can craft.

When your hunting deer take to stacks of throwing rocks and make sure you have the sprint thing unlocked you can sprint with shift when you have it. Then walk up to a deer from behind and just start hitting it and non stop throwing rocks and when it runs you can run to.

ok i didnt know the deer stopped off screen. I was just chasing them and they never stopped.
Poochieface Feb 10, 2017 @ 6:20am
Yea just let the deer run off screen don't chase them till they get off screen. They will stop and graze.

deer is the best game to hunt use the throwing rocks and a axe or stick ect. the hunger is much more beneficial and if you can kill minimum 1 a day youll live np

I prefer the boar, as you get some defensive training when they attack you as well. The obvious bonus is they do not run until low life. Just make sure you have some wooden armor and near full life and they should go down easy enough.

I have great luck with the mushrooms. Cook them and you get health and food.
