Stickmove options!
We’ve been seeing a lot of comments from players enjoying our new experimental stickmove (aka “free locomotion”). By default, this is a great new way to be immersed in The Gallery.

However, we’ve also introduced a bunch of additional configurations hidden in the menu--including controller-oriented (or “Onward-style”) locomotion. We want players to define their playstyle, and to be as comfortable and immersed in the world of Ember as possible. If you’re a fan of stickmove, try out the options below to fine-tune your experience.

We’ll be keeping an eye out over the coming weeks to see which options players use the most, and we’ll continue working on our systems to maintain a standard of comfort and polish as we bring stickmove to life as a full feature. We even have some additional locomotion options that we’re excited to introduce in future updates.

Where to find stickmove options
To find to these additional options, open your game menu and choose “Game Options.” Near the bottom is where you’ll select your locomotion type, either Blink teleportation by default, or our experimental stickmove option.

Scroll down past that using the touchpad/control stick/scroll bar, and you’ll find the rest of the settings under “Stickmove Options.” There you can configure stickmove exactly to your liking!
  • Movement Speed: This is how fast you’ll move in the game. The default value is 3, and the maximum speed is 5.

  • Movement Anchor: There are two options here: Head or Controller. Head-oriented will change your forward direction based on where you’re facing, while controller-oriented (or “Onward-style”) will change your direction based on where your controller is facing.

  • Axis Mapping: This setting determines which directions you can move, and is where you can enable strafing.

  • Vection Portal Amount: The Vection Portal is a comfort option that fades your peripheral during artificial movements to help reduce motion sickness. You’ll need to turn this on under “Game Options” first to enable.

  • Head Rotation Portal Amount: Another comfort option that will fade your peripheral, specifically if you move your head during artificial movement.
Beyond these settings, you can also enable Comfort Turns (aka “snap turns”) under “Game Options” which can be used with stickmove or Blink, whichever you prefer.

But whichever locomotion options you please, we hope you’re comfortable and immersed during your stay on Ember.

You are the best. Thank you so much for this wonderful game :-)

Sitck move with the controller anchor doesn't feel right to me. It seems to be based on where the controller is relative to the headset, rather than the absolute orientation of the controller. Is that right? It just feels off to me somehow. I've been playing a lot of XING lately, and that feels more natural to me. Thanks for the options! Still using Blink until stick move feels natural.

I agree something does not feel right with this. It is very hard sometimes to know whats going to happen when u push the touchpad. Sometimes I just run away in the opposit direction of ehere i thought I was going to go. Still using this method because i really want to use it instead of teleportation.

Any chanse we could see some stats in the future on what locomotion types people are using? It would be really interesting to see. Im betting we could be surprised :-p

Thank you so much for this "Stickmove" locomotion. I'm now able to walk/run through your wonderful game on my Virtuix Omni!

Chiming in, I'm finding stickmove is preferrable to teleport, but it doesn't quite feel right for me, either. Onward's approach seems to work well for me, at least I never get dizzy with it. It seems like it would be fairly simple to offer as an option.

Great game, though! I really was blown away.

Two things, One, disable the touch pad quick turn when free moving....
Two, why isn't walking sideways allowed?

You can disable Comfort Turns and enable Strafing via the options listed above. :)

Would it be possible to just do global positioning, instead of tying forward movement to controller or headset angle? I love the strafing and the motion-sickness reducing horse blinders, but the controller and headset bound movement having been throwing me off a little.

Great game guys. Keep up the fantastic work.
