Beat Gobble with 100% achievements

Carried hard by its visuals and music which are both top notch. Character designs are really fun as well.

Everything else? Is hit and miss

It has the potential to be good, if it was longer or paced better to allow for its ideas to come to better fruition. But it is over pretty much when the game starts demanding anything from the player

You have all these different power ups, and they rarely amount to much besides one off things due to the length of the game and they are added every few levels (less than 5 hours to 100%, ~15 mostly short stages, 3 bonus levels, 4 bosses). And while later levels have a good variety of power-ups within each level to find, they are not really needed for the main path forward most of the time.

There is more cutscene than gameplay it feels like in the first half of the game. And that is is part of the pacing issue. Almost every stage is bookended by cutscenes. Which wouldn't be a problem, but the interactions are very repetitive rehashing the same beats for almost the whole game. And while the interactions are admittedly charming and cute (mostly due to the animation and facial expressions), it does wear thin.

And with its insistence on having (almost) every stage attached to story, they never really allow for just a stage to exist as a break or breather from everything. The game could have really benefited from more non-story main progression stages which would have solved a good chunk of issues around its gameplay and pacing, especially for allowing more uses of the power ups.

Each level contains 3 hidden meats, which you use to unlock stuff in The Archive (a list of characters and enemies met or found), and a purple crystal. If you don't can't about the meats/Archive, you could zoom thru the game in like 3 hours or less. Enough purple crystals unlock the 3 bonus stages not needed to beat the game.

So while there is like an explorative element to each level, the progression doesn't really incentivize it in any meaningful way. And what you do unlock is just more of the same to find meat to unlock stuff in the archive.

You gobble up enemies to get essentially shield health, but this extra health is also your mana for you weapon special attack. Which sounds like it would be a balancing act, and I think that is the intent. But there are so many enemies in the stages (even in boss arenas) that you are practically invincible and can still use magic.

Your gobble also functions as a parry counter for an instant kill on minions regardless of health and their tells are very obvious. So you'll pretty much be gobblin' everything with little fear of every taking damage.

Gobble feels like an arcade game but removed of anything that makes it replayable. A gobble high score, number of gobbled in a single gobble, high score in general, time attack, boss rush, no-damage/no-mana mode. Literally anything would have made this feel like a better offering.

I still had some fun with the game (definitely towards the end), it has good ideas, amazing art direction and music, and it is very pretty to watch all the fun animations. It has the framework of something interesting, but I don't really think it shows its true promise until the end, and I'm just left somewhat unsatisfied by then.
