Do you even have a choice? I'd go with 1, 2 and 3 first -- and if you still don't have enough, you can try #4 (I didn't. Barely managed to stomach the first 3...).

I think he means the Series as a Whole, which is much bigger then just GU, and more then just games.

Game wise the order is
First series IMOQ (Infection, Mutation, Outbreak, Quarantine)
GU
Link (for the PSP)
Versus (a fighting game for PS3)
followed by 2 Japan exclusive Mobile games

The series includes various;
Anime
OVA
Movies
Manga
and
Novels

You don't have to play the first four games. But it will help if you care about the lore/meta of the series. And give context to a lot of the stuff that happens in GU.

Yeah I'm staritng to see as on volume 2 already that I feel like I'm missing soooo much context
