Good place to start in the series?
I never really played the console versions ( primarily because they are somewhat rare & expensive now ) Is this a good place to start? In regards to difficulty, I'm looking for something easy - medium? Thanks!

Yeah this is a good start but sometimes later in the game can be tough. anyway this game have a cheat mode like FFX/X-2 HD if you like to use it.

As .hack series fan, I ensure you - you can start from here, it's good and lovely story, even if you don't watched anime ".hack/Roots" that share the main character - it's totally okey to start from .hack//g.u.

Hey, Namco-Banday, I want .hack//link game also )))))

Back in the day I also started with the G.U series. I fell in love instantly with the .hack series. If u want something easy - medium this is the place cuz the new version looks like it will be a lot easier with the lowered monster difficulty and the retry feature. The Ps2 version was never "tough", just some battles here and there that demanded more previous planning, simple stuff like buying some healing items.

It would be better to start with the original 4....but good luck finding them as they are extremely expensive PS2 games these days....I still treasure my original ones I bought long ago....that being said they are the better games so GU would be a downgrade ;P

Honestly I think the story is the only thing the original 4 have going for them these days.

I think it will be a great game but also something that will fly under the radar for many...

I played the GU games first. Trust me; it's not that hard. If you do the side-quest first, you'll pass the game easily; the only hard part is the Doppleganger, and that's after you beat the game.

Always is emulation if you can't find the originals. As for which is better I feel GU is a far better series, mainly due to its far superior gameplay. Dot hack Gu vol 1 (of 3) is longer than the first 4 games put together pretty much so there is that too.

As for good old Dopple shows up before you finish vol 1, hes just a rare random spawn that can be in any overworld field. IIRC hes hard because hes always 10 levels above you.. memory might be failing me though as its been so long. In that fight you'll barely hurt him, yet he'd like kill your chars in half a combo. So its all about planning, the right team, and knowing when to strike, if you try to face roll him like you can most enemies, its going to go very badly for you. Either way its usually a long fight. But unless you completly suck by that point you should have more than enough heal/revive items. I don't think I ever died in vol 1-3 of GU though. Then again I usually never die in most rpgs.

.hack gu is one of my favority rpg of all time, i love the plot and the fact that i hate almost every character and get a chance to beat most of them at lest once.

The game is unfortanally to easy, level is everthing, if you grind you will be imortal, if you don't, be carefull to avoid dmg or you can be oneshoted if like 5 lvls below.

Hack sing was by far more hard and with a better plot, but for somereason i can't like that game.

He suggested roots because right when you start the game you are a level 1 noobie, then there is a huge time skip and suddenly you are this bad arse that everyone recognizes.

.hack//roots is what happens during the time skip. It is nothing you really have to know about but it makes the skip a lot less jarring if you know what happened.
