What is protect break?
It was a sort of hidden status effect that you saw in the first four .Hack games that indicated when you could successfully data drain a monster/player. In .Hack//G.U., you see protect break at the end of avatar battles after you have dealt a critical amount of damage to the opponent.
Hitting the opponent with data drain successfully reverts the opponent to a previous state and/or defeats the AIDA target.
Why did Haseo revert to level 1 when he was data drained?
Most likely it is because he was data drained by someone who wasn't infected with AIDA while under the protect break status. Without AIDA being a factor, Haseo did not fall into a coma. Since Haseo seemed to have taken a severe amount of damage during the fight, he must of been in protect break status when he was data drained, causing his character to revert to a previous state.
