Can you play as other characters?

So far I've only played as Haseo, but since this is a party-based game I'm curious. Also I don't care about spoilers.

You can have other party members and you can tell them when to use skills and maybe items, but you're always only going to be in control of Haseo.

I recall during the PS2 days, there were hacks for playing as ANY of the party members.
I do recall someone playing as Alkaid, one of the Azure Knights, etc. from a few youtube videos.

You can play as Annoying-grunt Haseo, Randomly armored Haseo, Spiky Haseo, White Haseo and finally as Kirito-reject Haseo

[Erroneous]

Back in the day there were GameShark, ARMax, CodeBreaker, Action Replay, etc... codes that let you modify character 1, character 2, and character 3 slots. Effectively replacing Haseo.

Currently on Discord, a user named kuriatsu has successfully got the main player in .hack//G.U. Last Recode to be other characters instead of Haseo. With one glaring problem, not all character assets were made for the main character i.e. skill triggers, kicking chims, riding steam bikes, etc..
