Its cool what you people think but I prefer the original over these. I like the characters and story better in the first 4 games. I just don't know why this is even released and they skipped over the first 4 which I would have bought in a heart beat. I hate the characters in this I hate the character designs and I hate the stupid story.

I prefer the old ones, but that doesn't really answer your question. As far as gameplay mechanics go, the party system and art of storytelling remains the same. The combat style is different by presenting a more action packed fighting sequence ( see gameplay on youtube for examples). Creating the different instances remain the same- combine keywords and create different difficulties with varying rewards and field types. Outside of the World, you do the same things as the old ones- check mail and forum boards to unlock fan art, secret areas, and progress the story for some parts. Overall, I believe you'll enjoy GU. It's extensive storyline and freedom that was shown in the old .hacks still are present in GU, making the game well worth the money:gametime ratio.

Well considering you only play a hour or less maybe a bit more I doubt you made it to the Arena Arc but had you made it to the arena Arc you would have been surprise. Considering you played the first 4 with Kite.

Honestly the Arena Arc is where thing really kick off

The original 4 were skipped because of how outdated the mechanics were. Not a lot of people would be able to enjoy the games today and it wouldn't really bring in new fans. G.U. however is much more accessible to a everyone. The story isn't really better than the original. Its more on par with it really. Both have their issues.

Well I do love the phases boss intro in the first 4 games. Man I'm currently playing volume 2 and I can't wait to fight my favorite phase in this game Gorre I love the Music The attack everything Gorre is the one Boss I can't ever be mad at.

The combat is much better in G.U. but as far as story and overall gameplay, I enjoyed the original series much more. The original .hack often felt like actually playing an MMO while G.U. just feels like a JRPG based on .hack

I perfer the orginal games, but they are all good in their own way.
Honestly... GU is more of a button mashfest compared to Sign(Trapped chests require quicktime input, data drain is action incident rather than a legit fight until they break before draining... stuff like that) Though I will admit I do like GU's version of skill aquisition and usage over sign's menu diving and equipment based skills... however having unique gear that was actually good was a huge plus on Sign's part compared to GU's "it's about as unique as a nail in a nail factory" The grunties are just npcs with no real interaction like they were in Sign, though you do use your personal grunty for accessing the book of 1000(instead of having the books on your person), storage, and adding stuff to your guild shop(only way to make money in this one practically and he only lets you add stuff to the shop) if you bother to use him for it...(You can access it in the town at Central via Gaspard to collect your money and add to the shop) The story is fairly dry overall tbh, but it's not a bad game gameplay wise, though I kind of wish we had more control over the character's development than we do... twin blades, broadsword, and scythe are a decent combo but it'd be cool if we could of chosen his weapons ourself tbh...

Well the thing is the Dot Hack series treats itself as a set in stone story. The games, unlike other anime series, ARE the "canon" unlike other anime series.
