He'll only spawn after you read the forum post that talks about being PK'ed by some dark guy.
I've been taking it slow and I've had him spawn in volume 1 on the very first try. I didn't realize he was a high level npc, though. When he spawns, I think he spawns with a level that is the same as the level cap for that volume.
I also didn't pick any specific area. The only requirement I read about was that it couldn't be in a dungeon. Most likely it's limited to outside zones.
in vol. 1 you only need to beat him once. The item you recieve from him, "Own King", will be needed to acquire a piece of his equipment in Vol. 2 when you beat him again. In vol 2 you need to beat him twice. first for "Forgotton Shadow" and second for "Moonlight Faith". In vol 3 you only need to beat him once. (or twice if you beat him before you get xth form)
If you have Own King, Forgotton Shadow and Moonlight Faith you will be given the Dopplegangers armor and accessory which are both completely overpowered items.
edit: all you really need to beat him in this game is to use your beast awakening. Beating him without awakening and Sleipner cheese is extremely difficult.
I love how creepy the Doppleganger is the music the red arrow the pulsing red screen the fact your party members are freaking out and the fact he can enter in your battles.
Oh and I forgot about the Tele Walk he does when he see you.
Generally, most area words are fine, so long as it's a field and besides story-related ones he won't spawn in those), iirc there's a few random areas where he just randomly doesn't spawn, but in that case just try another and it should be fine (i don't think there's a way of predicting which he doesn't spawn in, but it's rare regardless)
I found it easier to clear out the enemies in the map that way you don'taccidentally get into a battle and reset the timer. Then just wait, after 5-10 minutes, start wandering around. (I didn't even open the menu/map - interacted with nothing until I got him, I'm not sure how much it helped lol)
When you're close to the doppelganger, a red arrow will appear under Haseo, pointing in the direction of the doppel. Just follow the arrow and you'reset. It's a tough fight though, so be well prepared and good luck! :D
