Greeting card responses
Right now I'm in Vol. 2, I've sent every single greeting card to Alkaid and yet haven't gotten a single response expect from the "Hello" one. To which she replied something along the lines of, "I'll make a fine man out of you" or something like that.

Do I have to continue to raise her affection before I get a response from the other cards?

IIRC all or almost all greeting card responses are tied to affection, so Yes, raise hers and she'll start responding.
How does one raise affction anyways? It seems so random.

Affection has a few different sources that boost it, but the main source is Rengeki until you beat Vol3. Beating Vol3 gives access to the Chim God, who gives an affection boost for the party when kicked.

Gifting high rarity(4 star and 5 star) stuff to them, pulling off their Favorite Action, using a Rengeki, beating a Chim God(Vol3 and maybe 4 only), correct responses to emails and forums, greeting cards and their response chains...

Favorite Action varies by character, so Rengeki is often the only thing that you can do. Favorites that I know of include: 15~ hit combo(Silabus, Pi), they defeat an enemy(Piros, Kuhn), something to do with low HP healing(Atoli, Gaspard, Bo?).

Silabus and Pi are, due to their Favorite, two of the easiest characters to get affection with, getting a boost from Rengeki *and* from the hits leading into a Rengeki. With volume 3, both of their weapons have excellent arts for pure hit count over time as well. Anyone who shares this Favorite with them is also going to be easy, even if they aren't using swords or knuckles.

Using healing items also contribute for Favorite actions (for all characters) and raise the Morale Gauge. In Volume 3 you can buy a bunch of Holy Potions and spam them endlessly in battle to fill the Morale in order to unleash Avatar Awakening and farm those Virus Cores.
