But the main plot of GU is in itself pretty self-contained, so you don't need to have knowledge about the overall series to enjoy it.
I played the PS2 versions way back then with zero knowledge of any .hack related stuff and I still enjoyed the game and overall storyline.
If anything .hack GU made me more interested in the series as a whole.
having prior knowlege of the series can be a bonus since this gives nods to the conglomerate, but all you need to know is you play as a emo edgelord player, playing and equally emo edgelord character in a mmo(not really)rpg
as a teen i loved this series, as an adult... i want to say it didnt age very well, though the overall story is very rewarding
If anything you would only need to watch dotHack//Roots right up until episode 24 because 25 and 26 will contain spoilers. Though they do give a decent explanation of what happened through the games.
However if you really want to know the true story about what is really happen, you will need to research it more. (Spoiler some player in GU including the MC are player in .hack quadrilogy before)
