er yeah they did. The original GU volumes capped at 50, 100, 150 respectively.

you have to play the next volume to unlock the next level cap. Its been like that for all .hack games including the original 4

Nope. Volume 1 was capped to 50. Vol 1 is 50, Vol 2 is 100, and Vol 3 is 150. There is fake patch notes on the official forums before logging into "The World" when you start a new volume. It states they raised the level cap there. I believe in volume 2 they even said they change the combo for twin swords which is why your twin swords feel better in vol 2 and 3.
