As for the time skip you are referring to, the events of .hack//roots are what take place there, at least read a synopsis of it.
PK = player killer
PKK = player killer killer (it sounds kinda lame I know)
PKK: Players Killers Killers aka they kill PK.
It's probably more that you never played a real mmo at this point, otherwise you should know these terms (to be honest, i've never seen anyone calling themself PKK and for the PKer, they are simply everywhere on any mmo with Free PVP... But hey lol)
Thats an old MMO term from early 2000's. Which makes sense, considering when GU was released
But you don't need to play the original 4, it only gets referenced a bit.
Basically Haseo meets shino and ovan and a few other people from a guild called Twilight Brigade. Ovan disappears and the guild falls apart, then Shino gets killed by a mysterious player called Tri-Edge and falls into a coma in the real world. Haseo goes nuts trying to get revenge on tri-edge and get shino back, so he trains a lot and kills a lot of pkers.
The game does a good job letting you know what's up.
From some who's never played - Dude gets revenge for obvious comafied lover by a dude who "killed" her in-game, in coma in irl from it.
Have very small MMO knowledge could help a bit also.
Pretty much whenever you want. It only keeps you from logging out during certain events.
