Uh...missing story? Should I have played the first series?
So I have just started this game today and I just dont understand it at all lol. What is a PK, what is a PKK. The game makes me feel like I am missing crucial story parts from the previous games. Is this true or just the way it was developed and will get filled in the more I play?

TLDR: Should I go and emulate the prequels to this before playing this or will I still understand everything the more I play. Without watching anime or anything....do I need to watch it?

For the Infection series, dont bother. Just go to the Altimit section on the launcher and watch the terminal disks, all the info you need from them is covered there.

As for the time skip you are referring to, the events of .hack//roots are what take place there, at least read a synopsis of it.
PK = player killer
PKK = player killer killer (it sounds kinda lame I know)

PK: Players killers aka They kill everyone they see.
PKK: Players Killers Killers aka they kill PK.

It's probably more that you never played a real mmo at this point, otherwise you should know these terms (to be honest, i've never seen anyone calling themself PKK and for the PKer, they are simply everywhere on any mmo with Free PVP... But hey lol)

the game explains what PKs and PKKs and everything else is try watching the cutscenes, and GU has almost nothing to do with the original games

PK and PKK isnt even exclusive to .hack.

Thats an old MMO term from early 2000's. Which makes sense, considering when GU was released

It is no surprise you dunno what a PK is (very rarely have I ever heard the term PKK back in the day) as PKing these days pretty much doesn't exist. I miss those days where I could PK people and not destroy my character like what happens in MMOs these days.

The anime .Hack Roots is set during the 8 months from when Haseo starts to when the game really starts but this just gives you an understanding of how he ended up like that and his relationship with people like Shino and Ovan.

But you don't need to play the original 4, it only gets referenced a bit.
anima Nov 4, 2017 @ 8:48pm
roots anime is a pretty big part of the hack gu story the rest of the stuff just watch the terminal disk.

People that played Ultima Online know what a PK is, amirite. Ah the old days...

Lol so I guess the dialog was relevent to that time but now adays seems odd. I never got into gaming when I was younger. But as long as I dont need to have played the prior thee then ok. The anime has me concerned though. Would the story make sence and feel complete if I didnt watch the anime. Had a bad experence with FF15 where I didnt watch anime or movie and was missing some minor but important character developments.

The events of .hack//roots are relevant certainly, but the do not effect the games all that much honestly. Just read a synopsis.... roots is incredibly slow paced and very little actually happens in the 26 episodes.

Basically Haseo meets shino and ovan and a few other people from a guild called Twilight Brigade. Ovan disappears and the guild falls apart, then Shino gets killed by a mysterious player called Tri-Edge and falls into a coma in the real world. Haseo goes nuts trying to get revenge on tri-edge and get shino back, so he trains a lot and kills a lot of pkers.

The huge ass long cutscence in the beginning pretty much tells you everything you need to know for the plot of the game. I never watched the GU series and barely remember any .Hack.
The game does a good job letting you know what's up.

From some who's never played - Dude gets revenge for obvious comafied lover by a dude who "killed" her in-game, in coma in irl from it.

Have very small MMO knowledge could help a bit also.

So will I be able to log out or save whenever I want in the future or will it always be limited? I want to stop playing but it wont let me log out or save and I dont wanna just force quit.

Pretty much whenever you want. It only keeps you from logging out during certain events.

Those terms existed in hardcore mmos of old but make little sense in modern wow clones. With free pvp, full loot and xp penalty PK is a thing, but not when it's limited to arenas and random ganking when the only penalty for death is 10 seconds of your time.

.hack//ROOTs is not VITAL to playing G.U., and it's also not very good, but it does inform a lot of what the ♥♥♥♥ is going on at the beginning of G.U. and if you really want to know whats happening, you should watch it. Also there's characters that show up in G.U. that you just won't know anything about if you haven't watched ROOTS but it just acts like you should.
