Edit: I would say it's fine to watch it after you finish Vol 2. I wouldn't suggest watching it before then if spoilers bother you.
Sounds good to me, I'll follow your advice and play the first two volumes first.
I'll probably have a better grasp of the characters too
It's definitely worth checking out before you finish because there are a couple of returning characters from Roots that show up in the game and it's way more involving/cool if you've watched the anime.
CC2 should have put up a spoiler warning for Roots though because it really does give away one of the biggest plot twists in the game (once again, you'll be fine as long as you've finished Vol 2 first).
Edit: Perfect order in my opinion would be Vol 1->Vol 2->Roots->Vol 3->Roots OVA (episode 27, the last episode of the anime)-> Vol 4
Isnt it only the .hack GU 3d animation movie thingy that spoils it.
If I remember correctly the .hack roots anime is pretty much the prequel to the first volume.
I can tell you : play the game, enjoy it and then take it back and enjoy the serie then watch the trilogy movie.
There's only one spoiler (edit: if you don't count the OVA which takes place after Vol 3), but it's a huge one that happens in the last couple of episodes. Can't remember exactly which one it was but when I saw it I was so surprised how nonchalantly they just drop it on you.
Luckily I had already played GU before Roots back then so it wasn't a problem for me.
SIGN is definitely worth checking out too, especially if you're a big .hack fan.
Good thing though is that the watching order is not as complicated for Roots/GU as it is for SIGN/Liminality/IMOQ. That was soooo confusing for me as a kid.
