Is starting with G.U. okay?
I've been interested in getting into the .hack series for a while, and from what I can tell, G.U. isn't really connected to the original games in any significant way. Is this true, or would I be missing out on important storyline stuff if I started here?

You can absolutely start on GU. You might want to at least read a synopsis for .hack//roots though, I cant recommend watching the whole anime because it is super slow but.... yeah at least read the synopsis. At the start there is a large time skip after the tutorial which is covered by roots.

Well if you start with GU, whether on the PS2, PS4, or Steam; there's always the included Terminal Disc which will get you up to speed to the second generation of the dothack series, .hack//GU.

I watched Roots this week and liked it. It´s super slow, yeah, but the story is very interesting and have some amazing characters (I´ll miss Tawaraya and Phylo :,().
Apart from this, can´t understand how u can empathice with characters like Shino without Roots...

I am actually watching episodes of roots now and.... honestly as an anime fan I am really struggling to get through it. :steambored:

Oh, the Terminal disc sounds great; I'm glad that the Steam version includes it. And yeah, I'll definitely read or watch a synopsis of the originals. Thanks for the help!

It's cathartic, that's why it may bore you.
The ost and the overal ambiance is amazing though.

I actually rather enjoyed Sign, but roots is even slower with entire episodes where almost nothing actually happens. I think I can get through it but yeah.... definitely not going to be on my favorite animes list.

I would suggest watching Roots first. not only does it get you more invested but it also covers what happens in the 8 months between Haseo first joining the game in the tutorial to the point where the game actually starts.

you really dont need to watch roots to get the full bearings on what happened like the plot in roots kinda meanders about the game tells you what exactly happened in roots so you should be ok
