There is a whole world of .hack media that are all connected, but you don't have to play/watch them all to enjoy or understand this game. The most closely connected one to this game specifically is the .hack//Roots anime, which is set before this game. That gives you a little bit more of a look into Haseo and his motives, but it isn't a must to watch.
Original 3 games? Meaning the first one is included or it starts from the thirth one? I'm kinda confused haha :P
Thanks, I shall do that. It's clear to me now. Thanks to the rest of you guys as well! ^^
the only thing that triggering me when I played GU for first time when "Tri-edge" appear and when Haseo awaken his "Epitaph" which make me feel "WTF..... they were appear in this way??" at that time....since I play .hack INFECTION-QUANRANTINE too.
Probably the coolest thing about playing the original series was Kite's name in G.U. is the same as it was in those games.
i suggest anyone new to this game/series watches the anime .hack roots before playing as the game picks up where the anime ends
Not connected? Yes, they are, but in subtle ways. There are multiple reoccurring characters (Elk, Natsume, Wiseman, Sieg, Piros, etc). The same Aura is there and utilizing copies of the previous worlds Kite/Balmung/Orca. All the Epitaphs are throwbacks as well. Heck even the villain is a returning one.
I'm guessing you mean the main plot is not connected? Because everything that happened within the original .hack games lead into the events that occurr in the TW:R2 aka GU.
All this aside, anyone can play G.U without ever having to play the first series as it really does expand enough on the lore for people to know what is going on. The only thing you'll really miss out on as far as I can remember is why Endrance is the way he is, and his overall reason for being in "The World".
If anyting I recommend watching .hack//roots to anyone that hasn't played any .hack games and really wants to understand the characters of the G.U. franchise. roots really helps explain why Haseo is the way he is, and why he has trust issues as a whole. It also further explains his relationship to Shino. It also helps introduce character you will see late in the game in the form of Tabby, who Phyllo is, understanding the Twilight Brigade, understanding the people you never see that Tabby references, and so much more.
