Refine version or the Original?
Well, i have the Original version and i enjoy it very much, now with the Refine version i was wondering if it's worth buying it or if the Original is still better.

I haven't played the original in years. It seems very similar with the unfortunate side-effect that now you can't read her letters to you at the end of the game. It's all in Japanese. I heard the cheats have been removed.

My game came with subtitles at the end so you can still read the letter.

Only downside to refine is they don't have the debug menus to cheat with, lol. I miss messing around with the different items tbh, but that would basically enable people to save right before the end and cheat for all the ending acheivements, which kills the entire point of playing....that and isn't really acheiving it, lmao.

I just wish I could be able to have the fortune teller show up whenever, or have the fortune teller as a shop to go to. Would be way better for that, or being able to have travelling merchant set up shop in late game in town with increased prices to get other items.

The debug menu was never supposed to be in the game in the first place. The leaked english DOS version had it because it was incomplete. The debug menu was taken out of the Japanese Refine version to begin with. There are still traces of it in the code, but there's no way to access it.

However, and I'm going to be raise a "do not do this" sign. The Refine versions use the same save games the original games. It's likely possible to derp around in the pirated dos version, and load the save game in the Refine version to achieve the same effect. You will know who has done this because the endings achievements will all be unlocked in a short period of time when it requires 4-8 hours of play PER ending. The endings that involve the RPG mode take longer obviously.

There are some mistranslations in this version. when she dodges or blocks an attack, it's written as if the enemy has "skillfully" dodged or blocked hers. When she wins, it says that she was beaten by the enemy (I think it means to say that she HAS beaten the enemy). These kind of mistranslations seem to be purely asthetics though; if you check the stats, you'll see.

Not really a MIS-translation but certain stats have been translated differently (still pretty much mean the same thing):

Constitution=Stamina
Refinement=Elegance.
Charisma=Glamour
(Sensitivity was shortened to Senstv.)
Conversation=Speech
Cleaning=CLN/LDR (I don't know what LDR means)
Temperament=Personal. (Personality)

also, spoiler alert

-
-
- when you give the ring back, it has a certain stat has lowered rather than raised (it still raises it though, no worries!)

(ps, I don't consider not being able to cheat a downside-it made it way too easy and was way too much of a temptation)

(pps, I LOVE LOVE LOVE the voice acting!)

Almost forgot: It seems there isn't a way to get the default character (in the original, if you held down a lot of letter keys for a little while, you would get the default character named Olive). Since it doesn't appear that you can type out the names (only use the cursor on the letters), this doesn't seem to be a feature.

Aside from bad Engrish like when the king's mistress says "JOOshy". I admit I kind of laugh at that though.

LDR might mean "leader". It would make sense how she gets it from a kindergarten (If I remember corrently) I guess.

I never knew there was a default character (aside from the name) so if somebody knows how to get her in this new edition let me know please.

LDR means Laundry.

The English translation in refine is shockingly bad, but I think the addition of voices is a cute idea and Wendy is a lot tougher as a rival. I'd recommend getting refine.

This is gonna sound like the weebest thing ever to say, but one reason I enjoy the voice acting is that the person who plays Cube is the same voice actor as in the anime! And Cube in that was awesome, so, it's a voice actor I already know I like.

(In case you're wondering what the beep I'm talking about, it's called Petite Princess Yucie/Puchi Puri Yuushi and it's...I dunno if whoever's reading this would like it, but it's vaguely based off the PM franchise in general, has weird colourful characters, some dry sarcastic humour and random part-time jobs, along with not one but FIVE snarky butler-ish characters. Oh, and it's also made by GAINAX, obviously.)

I like the original SoftEgg translation a lot, a LOT, better, because it's so much more natural and funny, but it's a pain in the butt to get old games working on Windows 7 or later, so go with Refine simply because _you can actually play it_. :P
Also they're refining the translation as they go along...I'd like Charisma and Refinement back, myself, along with more than only 8 characters for names, dangit, but it's still improving.

The original DOS version is better because it isn't censored. This version was censored and had fanservice removed to be more family friendly when it was released for the Dreamcast.

Time to revive a dead thread XD

Been thinking about buying it on steam, but as usual it got censored and seems like translation is ad, I wonder if there is a fan patch or a way to replace the new dialogue files with the older ones, saw some people saying the structure was the same, but nothing else was continued on.
As for the censorship, I heard that in 2017 it was released intact and found a thread talking about how to download old versions so you can play them, would just need to find which version was it: https://www.reddit.com/r/Steam/comments/611h5e/guide_how_to_download_older_versions_of_a_game_on/

And I found this in another thread here, since it's more recent I imagine the older censorships are still intact(?) hard to know since I don't know what was changed.

into your steam console:
steam://nav/console
(copy and paste into your browser)

You'll have to wait for the download to finish, you wont see any progress except the log eventually telling you that it was saved to:
Steam\steamapps\content\app_583040\depot_583042

You can then copy those files to the games installation directory to have the old version. There is some hope for getting a patch for the new version if the PM2 dat tools work to extract the data, but it seems that project hasn't been updated in a long time.
