Shields Chapter 5

Is the order one must push the shields on the side of the castle in chapter 5 (the crypt) hinted at anywhere? Is it supposed to be trial and error?

I got past the puzzle, was just wondering if I had missed anything or if it was really supposed to be trial and error. On that note I'd also like to know if the gas valves puzzle in chapter 8 (time machine) is also trial and error.

I couldn't find any clues the gas valves puzzle (except that the fire dies out whenever you do something wrong).

In fact, there were two clues hidden about the shields. One of them on the war machine and the other one under a table.

Look closely at the table and the big war machine in the center of the room. The hints are there.
