Moving Headquarters Units
Is it possible to move an HQ unit by itself without have all the units attached to the HQ move also ?

I believe so but don't quote me on it. I've only just discovered this and trying it now, in the tutorial scenario, and I have been able to move my HQ units indepenadently.

Thanks but I can't figure out how to do it.

Its a bit of a worry if your highest command HQ on the map ( the boss HQ) is being threatened by enemy units and you want to move it out of the way without every other unit on the map attached to the HQ also moving.

Have not yet seen any option to do such a thing. I'm afraid you are going to have to detach your subordinate units in advance.

One way to accomplish this is to issue separate orders to subordinate units before issuing the move order to the HQ unit.

If I want to move a division HQ alone, I'll issue separate orders to its next lower echelon unit(s) HQ(s) (regiment / brigade) to keep a majority of combat units in place / on task before moving the division HQ.

This doesn't necessarily prevent direct reporting units from moving with the division, but unless they have already had separate orders or attachments to division subordinates issued, they are necessary to protect the Division HQ until detached as a reserve component anyway.

As Jim is alluding to, there is no way other than detaching subordinates first.

Thanks guys. That is what I suspected.

If you set your OB view toggle to "Current OP Plan Structure" you will be able to tell what subordinates will receive the order and move along with the selected HQ. This is helpful when you want to relocate your "on-map boss" and supply base and be aware of how the order will transfer down the chain.
